Former Leeds United player Jamie Shackleton has appeared in court charged with a motoring offence. Shackleton, who left Elland Road last summer following the Whites' promotion near-miss, appeared at Leeds Magistrates' Court today accused of being in charge of a motor vehicle when over the prescribed limit.

The court heard that Shackleton, who now plays for United's title rivals Sheffield United, blew 73 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath during a breathalyser test, more than double the legal limit of 35, after he was arrested at the Fairburn Ings nature reserve in Castleford on December 21. The 25-year-old denied the offence and a trial date was set for June 12 at the same court.

Leeds-born Shackleton, a graduate of United's youth system, made close to 100 appearances for the Championship outfit before departing the club following the expiry of his contract. A statement released on the Whites' website back in July read: "Having now decided to accept different terms elsewhere, everyone at the club would like to wish Jamie every success for his future and thank him for all the effort he put into representing Leeds United both on and off the pitch. He will always be welcome back at Elland Road."

Shackleton, who can be utilised in defence or in midfield, has struggled to hold down a regular starting place at Bramall Lane this season. He has featured 12 times for the Blades but only made two league starts. Injury niggles have also limited Shackleton's first team involvement.
