Max Dean's impressive debut season at KAA Gent has been cut short by injury. The former Leeds United prospect sustained a serious knee problem in the Belgium club's defeat to Royale Union SG on Boxing Day.

The talented striker, who left Elland Road in January 2023 to join Milton Keynes Dons, was withdrawn at half-time in the Jupiler League duel. Dean has notched 13 goals in 30 appearances since moving to Gent last summer - four of them coming in European competitions.

“It is with a heavy heart that we have to report that Max Dean suffered a serious knee injury during the match against Union,” reads a statement posted on Gent’s official website. “Medical examinations revealed a tear in his anterior cruciate ligament.

“Unfortunately, this means that Max will be out of action until the end of the season. Max will undergo surgery next week and will then begin months of rehabilitation. Our energetic striker is determined to return stronger and is in good hands with our medical staff.

“Max’s mentality and perseverance are admirable, and we have no doubt that he will overcome this setback. Max, all Buffalo’s are behind you and we wish you a speedy recovery.”

Confirming his status on social media earlier today, Dean wrote: “Gutted. Season finished, time to get back to work." He has vowed to come back stronger following the injury setback.

“I’m going to work really hard on my comeback so I can help the team again next season,” he said. “I want to thank the fans for the support I felt every week.”
