Former Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino has made a big impression in the AFC Champions League - with a spectacular goal for Al-Ahli.

The 33-year-old has been in action for his side as they took on Al Saad in the group stage of the competition. His side found themselves 1-0 down after just one minute, but Firmino stepped up nine minutes later, and he did so in style.

Al-Ahli were able to win the ball up high, and as the ball was headed back across the penalty area, the Brazilian scored a spectacular right-footed overhead kick that gave the goalkeeper no chance. The goal was his third of the competition, following a brace against Al-Shorta back in November.

Firmino has scored a total of eight goals and provided a further four assists in 24 games in all competitions so far this season. It adds to his nine goals and seven assists in 34 games last season.

The forward completed a move from Liverpool to Al-Ahli on a free transfer in the summer of 2023. He has had a difficult season, that saw him stripped of the captain’s armband earlier this season, although he has since regained the armband and has scored three goals and provided three assists in his last six Saudi Pro League starts for the club.

Following Firmino’s equaliser, things got better for Al-Ahli. Roger Ibanez scored in the 39th minute to turn the game around, scrambling the ball in from a corner to give his side a 2-1 lead. Former Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez then scored in the 81st minute, sweeping into an unguarded net after Ivan Toney was brought down by the Al Saad goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham after Firmino had set him clear through.

The win moves Al-Ahli three points clear of Al-Hilal in the group stage standings.
