Former Manchester United manager David Moyes has been awarded an OBE.

The Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) is given to people who have done something special for their region or country and Moyes' contribution to football has been recognised.

Moyes is currently out of work and most recently managed West Ham, who he left at the end of last season. Moyes spent four-and-a-half years with the Hammers and won the 2023 UEFA Europa Conference League, and also secured three top-nine Premier League finishes during his tenure.

The 61-year-old is a familiar face to Mancunians due to his time in charge of United, which ended after just 10 months following a turbulent transition from Sir Alex Ferguson's reign.

Ferguson felt Moyes could build on his success at Old Trafford but his fellow Scotsman struggled, which led to him being sacked in April 2014 and replaced by Ryan Giggs on an interim basis.

Moyes' first and only summer at the helm of United was a disaster. Gareth Bale, Cesc Fabregas, Cristiano Ronaldo, Thiago Alcantara and Luka Modric were all linked to United in that window but the club was left scrambling on deadline day to sign Marouane Fellaini from Everton.

After leaving United, Moyes joined Spanish club Real Sociedad, oversaw a relegation at Sunderland and had two stints with West Ham, with the latter producing a European trophy.

Speaking in the summer, Moyes told Simon Jordan's podcast: "My time at Manchester United was a failure. If I've got any regrets in my career, it's taking one of the biggest jobs in world football and not being able to make it work. When it's my time to retire, that'll always be my biggest regret.

"I found it really difficult when I lost the Manchester United job, there were so many stories that came out that were untrue – and I couldn't stop them. I think the set-up I went into that job with was a set-up that was successful at Everton. I was trying not to change Sir Alex Ferguson's system."

Cyclist Tom Pidcock, swimmer Duncan Scott, rower Helen Glover and former Formula One racer Martin Brundle are among the others to have been given an OBE in the New Year Honours. Former England manager Gareth Southgate has received a knighthood.
