Former Newcastle United boss John Carver makes stunning statement on managerial return
John Carver pulled off a result that many had branded "mission impossible" on Sunday night.
The former Newcastle United coach oversaw a 1-0 win for Lechia Gdańsk against Polish giants and table toppers Lech Poznan. Carver is in charge of the cash-strapped Polish side and working with a team of youngsters due to a number of injuries for the relegation-threatened club.
However, since arriving at Lechia he has guided them to two victories and a draw, including a shock and slender win over Lech Poznan thanks to a goal from Tomas Bobcek. In a game in which Lech Poznan went in as massive favorites but the opposition went down to 10 men in the first half and Carver's side piled on the pressure to win huge game.

After going into the job with Lechia six points adrift of safety, Carver's team are just a point away from the top-flight safety zone and in with a shout of survival again. Carver said last night: "It's a nice feeling, of course, but it's not about my feelings, it's about what's going on in our locker room and how hard the staff and everyone is working to get us away from trouble. I'm proud of each and every one of them. To win such a match against such a big brand, with such good players, and against the leader of the Ekstraklasa, it's definitely something special."
On a day in which his former club Plymouth Argyle, who he coached in 2010, beat Liverpool, Carver felt that the result will be talked about for years to come in Gdansk.
Carver said: "Sometimes sensations happen, even in England there was a situation where Liverpool lost to Plymouth. Even the main favourites lose and today we won against the leader. Despite this, I still think that Lech is one of the best, if not the best team in the league. I watch the Ekstraklasa all the time, I watched it today, I watched it yesterday and I still think that they are the best team."
