Former Newcastle United defender tragically passes away at just 27

Newcastle United staff were today coming to terms with the tragic news that former defender Michael Newberry has passed away at just 27.

The Academy product's death has been confirmed by Northern Irish club Cliftonville. Newberry came through Newcastle's youth set-up and played for the second string before leaving in 2018. Newberry had won the prestigious Wor Jackie award only in 2016 before leaving to pursue a professional career a couple of years later.

A Newcastle statement read: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former player, Michael Newberry, at the age of 27. Our sincere condolences go to Michael's family, friends and all at Cliftonville at this time. Rest in peace, Michael."

A statement from Cliftonville read: "Cliftonville FC are devastated to learn of the sudden death of Michael Newberry. Our condolences are extended to Michael's family and friends, as well as the many team-mates he played with during his career, and fans who will be shaken and saddened by this heartbreaking news. Rest in peace, Newbs".

In 2018, Newberry left the Magpies to sign for Icelandic side Víkingur Ólafsvík, before playing for Linfield for three years.

The Geordie boy had made 23 appearances for the club's Under-21s before leaving during the Rafa Benitez era. Another of his former club's Linfield also paid tribute to Newberry and posted: "The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club are with Michael's family and friends at this very sad time."

The NI Football League said they pass on their "heartfelt condolences to Michael's family, friends and everyone connected with Cliftonville Football Club at this sad time".

After winning the Wor Jackie award in 2016, Newberry had said: "When you look at the names on it, I still get a little bit shell-shocked. My name is on there with the likes of Andy Carroll, it's a bit mad. I felt like I had a good year, but there were players in my team who also had good years."
