Former Reading striker Dominic Ballard has returned to League One, joining Cambridge United on loan until the end of the season.

The 19-year-old spent time on loan with the Royals last season until a patella tendon injury saw him return to parent club, Southampton.

Ending 2023/24 with five goals in 12 appearances, the teenager earned a move to Blackpool over the summer.

Scoring once in 22 appearances under Steve Bruce at Bloomfield Road, Southampton recalled the youngster earlier this month.

Down the pecking order at St Mary's, who sit rock-bottom of the Premier League, the England Under-20 international has dropped back to the third tier with Cambridge.

Ballard said, “I am really looking forward to it. Hopefully I can come in and really make a difference to the team. The gaffer has said that they are in need of a goalscorer and a hero and that really appealed to me.”

Garry Monk's side sit 22nd in League One, six points adrift of safety in the relegation zone.

Beating Mansfield Town 3-2 on Saturday, the Royals completed a league double over the U's with a 3-1 victory on New Year's Day.
