Hull City have completed the permanent signing of experienced defender John Egan on an 18-month contract after agreeing a deal with fellow Championship club Burnley - the Tigers have the option to extend it by a further 12 months.

City have been keen to add defensive cover to their ranks throughout the winter transfer window but have had to wait until the final day to get their man, with Ruben Selles opting to bring in the former Sheffield United stalwart to provide competition to Alfie Jones, Sean McLoughlin, Fin Burns and Charlie Hughes, and add valuable experience to his squad.

Egan arrives at City with more than four hundred career appearances under his belt, including 210 in the second tier. Half of those came during a successful period at Bramall Lane, which saw him play 73 times in the Premier League for the Blades. However, over the past couple of seasons, the 32-year-old has struggled to play regularly.

The Republic of Ireland international and United skipper picked up an Achilles injury at West Ham in October 2023, which ended his season prematurely and came as a huge blow to Chris Wilder's Blades last term, who went on to get relegated from the top-flight, and after moving to Turf Moor in the summer following his departure from the Steel City, Egan has played only seven times under Scott Parker. As so often happens in football, such are the strange quirks; he could make his debut against the Clarets next Wednesday night when the Tigers return to action at Turf Moor.

Throughout what has been a hugely disappointing campaign, City have struggled defensively, and while they've kept three clean sheets in their last three away wins, including that thumping 3-0 success at Egan's former club last Friday night, Saturday's 2-1 home loss to Stoke City exposed their weaknesses, especially at home, and Selles will hope Egan's arrival can help cut out those errors which have blighted their campaign.

Egan's arrival is the eighth of the winter window, and another arrival cannot be ruled out before the 11pm deadline on Monday evening, though Selles is understood to be content with his options.

It was hoped the Tigers would sign a left-back before the deadline, but having missed out on his top target Charlie Taylor, Selles was unwilling to settle for a player he didn't believe would improve the options he's already got.
