Former Wigan Athletic and Walsall goalkeeper joins Barnet on loan from Cheltenham Town
Cheltenham Town goalkeeper Owen Evans has joined National League club Barnet on loan until the end of the season.
The 28-year-old started the season as Robins number one, making 11 successive League Two appearances.
But since suffering a shoulder injury in October, which kept him out for more than a month, he has been unable to dislodge the more experienced Joe Day, who is also the club's goalkeeping coach.
Gloucestershire Live understands youth team goalkeeper Mamadou Diallo's work experience loan to National League South club will be cut short, with the teenager now set to deputise for 34-year-old Day, who has been in outstanding form for Michael Flynn's team.
The club's other senior goalkeeper, Max Harris, is on loan at Weston-super-Mare until the end of the campaign.
Welshman Evans began his career at Hereford United before signing for the Wigan Athletic academy.
While with the Latics he made one EFL appearance as well as taking on loan spells at Witton Albion, Rhyl, North Ferriby United, Sutton United, Macclesfield Town and then Cheltenham, for whom he saved a penalty in the 2019/20 play-off semi-final first leg at Northampton Town.
He signed permanently with Cheltenham in the summer of 2021 before switching to Walsall a year later.
Evans then returned to Whaddon Road last summer as one of 19 summer signings ahead of the club's return to the fourth tier.
Barnet boss Dean Brennan said on his arrival at The Hive: “Owen is a quality goalkeeper and he gives us more depth to our squad.
“He also has plenty of EFL experience and he will add a different profile to what be already have at the club.”
* Cheltenham play League Two leaders Walsall at home on Saturday, with an earlier kick-off time of 12.30pm.
