Former Wrexham captain Ben Tozer has predicted how he thinks the club's January transfer window will pan out.

The long-throw specialist spent three successful years with the Red Dragons after joining from Cheltenham Town in August 2021, helping them achieve back-to-back promotions from the National League and League Two.

The defender was released by manager Phil Parkinson during the summer and now plays for promotion challengers Forest Green Rovers in non-league's top tier.

Tozer returned to Wrexham on Sunday to watch his old team-mates beat Wigan Athletic 2-1 and shared his thoughts on how the club will conduct its business in the impending transfer window.

Parkinson has previously been well-backed by Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, with many supporters speculating whether January could see their first seven-figure signing.

However, Tozer claims that Wrexham don't need to spend big in January and has warned fans not to expect much action until the end of the window.

Speaking as part of the club's live matchday coverage on YouTube, the 34-year-old said: “It shouldn't be about breaking the million- pound barrier, it should be about signing the right player and that's what the gaffer will absolutely do.

“He won't rush and there won't be a signing on the first of January. I don't know that for a fact, but I'd put a lot of money on it that he will probably wait until the last two or three days.

“That's because teams are going to be thinking ‘Wrexham need this, Wrexham need that. We’re going to charge you this, we're going to charge you that.’

“You’ve almost got to plant that seed into a player’s head and let them get a little bit upset.

“Then by the end of the window (they can) ultimately force their way out and force their way here, which helps the player and the club's cause.”

Wrexham's current record transfer is striker Mo Faal, who the club reportedly shelled out £590,000 to sign from West Brom during the summer.

Among the players they have been linked with in January is Leeds United forward Patrick Bamford, who would not be a cheap acquisition.

Club director Shaun Harvey confirmed in November that Parkinson will be given money to spend during the window by Reynolds and McElhenney. It follows talks recently being held between the manager and the two actors.

However, with key players returning from injury, Tozer insists that Wrexham don't need to spend for the sake of it as they sit second in League One heading into the new year.

He added: “Who knows how it's going to go? It’s a case of is the right player there and available? If they aren’t, you've just got to say, we'll go with what we've got.

“Players are coming back from injury and Jack (Marriott) was flying before and Arthur (Okonkwo) was solid.”
