Four Pembrokeshire women to row across Atlantic this month
Four women from Pembrokeshire are set to row across the Atlantic Ocean in a 10-metre-long boat.
Team Cruising Free will take on the 3,200-mile unassisted journey from Lanzarote to Antigua in the Atlantic Dash, departing on January 23, 2025.
The annual event is described as one of the toughest endurance challenges in the world.
The team's boat will be driven entirely by human power, with the crew rowing in relentless two-hour shifts all day.
The voyage is expected to take around 50 days, during which they will face 30-foot waves, wildlife, sleep deprivation, blisters, and salt sores.
The crew, consisting of Sophie (32), Polly (50), Janine (70), and Miyah (24), are not only aiming to complete the challenge but also hope to break two world records in the process.
If successful, Janine will become the oldest woman to row any ocean, and Sophie will be the first person living with cystic fibrosis (CF) to row an ocean.
Sophie said: "I want to make the most of my newfound health.
"For me, this isn’t just a crazy personal adventure; it’s also a chance to reimagine the future of cystic fibrosis and bring hope that one day everyone with CF will be able to cruise free through life."
The team has a fundraising target of £100,000, with proceeds going to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Emily’s Entourage, and Paul Sartori Hospice at Home.
Sophie, who has lived with CF, a progressive, life-threatening genetic disease, was limited in her activities for many years.
However, her participation in a drug trial three years ago significantly improved her health, opening up a world of possibilities.
Janine, a seasoned rower for 30 years and a coach at Neyland Rowing Club, has crossed the Irish Sea three times.
However, she had always turned down the Atlantic challenge, believing it to be "really uncomfortable and difficult."
Reaching the age of 70, she realised that if she didn't attempt it now, she probably never would.
Polly, also a rower at Neyland, had dreamed of an Atlantic row for a long time, but it was a combination of lockdown and a mid-life crisis that led her to join Team Cruising Free and make that dream a reality.
The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is a UK charity that funds research, improves standards of care, and supports people with the condition and their families.
Emily’s Entourage, a US-based non-profit, accelerates lifesaving research and drug development for individuals with CF who are left behind by current therapies.
The Paul Sartori Foundation provides free hospice at home services and support to people in Pembrokeshire living with life-limiting illnesses.
Their mission is to enable patients to live their final days at home with dignity, independence, and comfort, surrounded by their loved ones.
Miyah chose to support the Paul Sartori Foundation as a way of giving back after they supported her family when her mum recently lost her battle with cancer.
The team will share their stories from the crossing to aid their fundraising efforts.
