Frank Lampard has explained the reason behind securing “priceless” Jake Bidwell on a new contract at Coventry City.

There was a time earlier in the defender’s Sky Blues career when the club appeared ready to wheel and deal with the player who was strongly linked with a move to Birmingham two years ago this month at a time when former boss Mark Robins was trying to get Jay Dasilva from Bristol City.

The Robins wouldn’t let Dasilva go until the following summer, however, so Bidwell stayed put and, ironically, went on to win his place back ahead of Dasilva following his arrival from Ashton Gate with continued stout and consistent performances that have endeared him to the supporters.

And new head coach Lampard has quickly been impressed by the 31-year-old, wasting no time at all in offering the experienced and influential head in the dressing room a new deal to keep him at the club for another two and a half seasons.

Asked what he likes about Bidwell and the reasoning behind offering the player a new deal, Lampard said: “On and off the pitch, he trains brilliantly and is a great lad. He’s a leader in the dressing room and gives everything every day.

“He sets a good example and plays consistently well as a left-back and left wingback, and those things are priceless for me, in my opinion so I think it’s well deserved.

“We’re all very happy, he’s very happy. He loves the club and he’s happy here so it’s good news for us.”
