Frank Lampard has explained Coventry City’s January transfer business which saw the club bring one player in and let one go.

The Sky Blues made a statement signing in midfielder Matt Grimes, who cost a reported £3.5m-£4m from Swansea City, while letting out striker Fabio Tavares on loan to Burton Albion, having started the window with the head coach admitting that his team could do with some “help” on the wings.

Asked if it was a case of no more money to go round or whether he felt he has enough strength in depth and quality to see him out until the summer, Lampard said: “Well, we have got three new signings, hopefully, in the next two to three weeks with Ephron, Haji and Ben Sheaf, our captain, so that changes the look of our squad. A lot of teams do business at this time of year and load the squad or try to find solutions. We have been going OK.”

He added: “Matt is a big signing for us and if we felt we wanted to do more or needed to do more then there would have been those conversations. It certainly wasn’t a case of no more money, as you put it. That’s not in my realms to delve into that but since I have been in I have been working with Doug (King) and Dean (Austin) and we are very together on what we want to do.

“We’re not in a bad place from where we were when we first came in two months ago. Matt’s a big plus and those three boys coming back will be big pluses, too.”

As for how soon they are expected to be available, the City boss revealed: “Well Ephron is training now and there’s a chance he could be involved at the weekend, but probably more QPR and going forward. And then we hope Haji Wright will train with us at the back end of next week but that’s a bit more tentative steps, we’ll see, and then Ben Sheaf not far after that.”
