Coventry City are reported to be leading the chase for Crystal Palace’s experienced and versatile Jeffrey Schlupp.

The Sun’s transfer specialist Alan Nixon, who was at Ewood Park on Tuesday night where the Sky Blues beat Blackburn 2-0 in the Championship, claims City have “moved ahead” of Rovers in the race to secure the 32-year-old’s signature.

He claims on the Patreon platform today: “Frank Lampard is keen to land the versatile Schlupp who can leave the Eagles despite being on Oliver Glasner’s bench.

“Rovers made the running for Schlupp but are yet to agree terms or a deal that appeals to the player. Coventry are trying to offer a better deal and the option of a long term move at the end of the season.”

Schlupp is out of contract at the end of the season and has been limited to 16 substitute appearances in all competitions this season, including 12 off the bench in the Premier League. It’s understood that Palace are likely to allow the experienced campaigner – who helped Leicester City win the Premier League title in 2015/16 – to leave this month.

Schlupp could leave on loan or potentially agree a settlement with Palace to join another club permanently. Ultimately, finances, both for Schlupp and the Eagles, and the player’s preference will dictate his destination.

The player ticks a lot of boxes for the Sky Blues in terms of positions, with the left-sided operator having played at left-back, left-wing and as a central midfield whilst at Palace.

Lampard has made no secret of the fact that he’d like to provide “help” on the wings in the continued absence of Haji Wright and Ephron Mason-Clark, while the injury to Ben Sheaf also leaves City short in midfield. The fact that he can play as a full-back/wing-back is another bonus.
