Coventry City’s pursuit of Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo is reported to have hit a snag, delaying confirmation of the deal.

The Sky Blues were understood to be set to take Matondo on loan for the second half of the 2024/25 season. However, the Telegraph claim negotiations have now stalled and that there is “work to do to get the deal completed”.

The 24-year-old winger, who mainly operates on the left but can play on the right and as a second striker, has been limited to six Scottish Premier appearances so far this term under manager and former Sky Blues midfielder Philippe Clement, but has contributed two goals and two assists in that time. A hamstring injury has also hampered his progress this term.

It was understood that the deal would see the player join on an initial loan with a buy option in the region of £2m in the summer, and it appears this is where there are problems with negotiations. Telegraph reporter Mike McGrath adds on X: “Matondo has been in talks over a move to Coventry City, but negotiations have stalled over bonus payments/add-ons.”

Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday have also been linked with the player this month, but sources north of the border claim Frank Lampard remains favourite to land Matondo as his first signing.

Capped 12 times by Wales, Matondo is an international team-mate of Jay Dasilva who started his career at Cardiff City before being snapped up by Manchester City for a compensation fee, where he got to know Joel Latibeaudiere. He was then sold to Bundesliga side Schalke 04, aged 19, for a reported fee rising to £11million where he played with Haji Wright.

Loan spells at Stoke City and Cercle Bruges followed before a reported £1.8m move to Rangers in the summer of 2022.
