Swansea City are among a clutch of Championship clubs to have been offered the chance to sign former Manchester United defender Timoth Fosu-Mensah.

The 27-year-old has been a free agent since leaving German champions Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, and has spent the last couple of weeks training with Dutch giants Ajax in a bid to keep up his fitness.

He is currently seeking a new club, and sources in the Netherlands have told WalesOnline that the versatile defender has been pitched to numerous Championship clubs.

Middlesbrough, Queens Park Rangers and Stoke City are among the others to have been offered the chance to seal a move, as have Blackburn Rovers, although they are understood to have passed on the offer due to concerns over the player's fitness.

Rangers and Feyenoord have expressed similar concerns following their decisions to turn down a free transfer, and it remains to be seen what will happen next.

There's still a chance he may yet win a contract at Ajax should he impress and prove his fitness, but it's understood a move to the Championship would appeal.

Fosu-Mensah has primarily operated as a right-back during his career, but can also play as centre-back and even in a holding midfield role.

Luke Williams was due to fly out to the Netherlands over the weekend to assess a centre-back option, although it's now been suggested he cancelled that trip due to the player in question not actually playing for his club.

A centre-back is at the very top of his wish-list, with the club's pursuit of Joe Low seemingly stalling in recent weeks, with chairman Andy Coleman now under increasing pressure to find a breakthrough in this window.

In his programme notes ahead of Tuesday's visit of Sheffield United, Coleman said: "As we navigate the January transfer window, I want to acknowledge the challenges it presents.

"Every club is looking to strengthen their squad, but at the same time, no club wants to lose key players. This makes it a very difficult window to navigate and get right.

"We only want to sign players who will genuinely improve our first team, which means we have to be absolutely sure about the targets we are pursuing.

"Rest assured, we are working diligently to try and make the best decisions for the team and the club's future."
