Marco Silva fumes at ‘hard to explain’ red-card reprieve as Ipswich hold Fulham
Fulham manager Marco Silva labelled referee Darren Bond’s decision to not show Leif Davis a red card “hard to explain” after Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Ipswich Town at Craven Cottage.
Raúl Jiménez converted two penalties, the second in stoppage time, to earn the hosts a point after they twice went behind through Sammie Szmodics’ opener and then a Liam Delap spot-kick.
Silva agreed with all three penalty decisions, but felt Ipswich should have been reduced to 10 men when Harry Wilson was brought down by Davis as he ran through on goal. VAR checked the incident but deemed the yellow card sufficient.
“I’m on the same page as the Fulham fans,” the Portuguese said when asked about the matter. “They [decisions] go in the same direction and it was a difficult afternoon for the ref and was hard to explain.
“I can’t understand why [no red card was shown]. We saw it with the red card for Tom Cairney [upgraded from yellow card after a VAR check at Tottenham on December 1] and last week against Bournemouth with the Ryan Christie situation... [yellow card not upgraded after a VAR check].
“It was something I can’t control but I don’t want to get in trouble so it’s better to stop in this moment.”
The result moved Ipswich level on points with 17th-placed Wolves, who have a game in hand, as they continued their survival bid.
Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna had mixed feelings on the draw, with his side having led twice, but praised 21-year-old striker Delap for another impressive display.
“It’s a point gained but also two points dropped because they scored in the 90th,” McKenna said.
“I’m proud of aspects of the performance but disappointed with the penalties as they were a little unnecessary. There’s a lot of positives and we take the point.
“[Delap] is showing real desire, he’s always making his presence known to the centre-backs, he’s an excellent outlet and he rolls defenders, he’s doing it well. To take the penalty in the manner he did, he did well.”
Ben Godfrey was in the stands at Craven Cottage after Ipswich signed the former Everton central defender on loan from Serie A club Atalanta until the end of the season.
“We’re positive about it and happy to have him,” McKenna added.
“It’s an area we wanted to strengthen. Axel Tuanzebe has missed a lot of time and we’ve missed that profile of a centre-back who can play right-back and be strong in one-on-ones.
“He has Premier League experience, is hungry and we’re happy to have him in the second half of the season.”
Szmodics put the visitors ahead seven minutes before half-time against the run of play with their first chance of note. Delap surged forward and fed Davis, whose cross was headed onto the bar by overlapping right-back Ben Johnson. After a scramble to clear the danger, Szmodics was on hand to crash the ball off Calvin Bassey and past Bernd Leno.

It took until the 69th minute for Fulham to get back on level terms. Wilson found a pocket of space once more following Rodrigo Muniz’s pass and was brought down inside the box by Sam Morsy. The VAR check went in favour of the home side this time and Jiménez stepped up to slot his spot-kick to Christian Walton’s left.
The drama continued soon after the restart when the tricky Delap got a foot to the ball first and was fouled by Timothy Castagne, with referee Bond awarding a penalty to Ipswich. The 21-year-old powered his effort past Leno to put Town ahead for a second time.
Ipswich went close to a third when substitute Jack Clarke struck the post, but Fulham continued to probe for an equaliser and it arrived in the first minute of stoppage time. Jiménez picked himself up after being fouled by Davis and coolly found the top-right corner to secure his side a share of the spoils.

Raul Jimenez says Fulham should’ve won. “It is two lost points. It is really bad for us,” said the striker speaking to Sky Sports. “We need to keep improving.”

Fulham vs Ipswich match background
Good afternoon and welcome to live coverage of Fulham vs Ipswich Town from the Premier League as Kieran McKenna’s men look to escape the relegation zone by ending the hosts’ run of seven matches without defeat.
Ipswich earned their first home victory of the season with a 2-0 triumph over Chelsea on Monday and moved to within one point of Wolves in 17th and just two points adrift of Everton in the spot above. Three points this afternoon would therefore see the visitors climb out of the relegation zone and up to 16th, but having played a game more than the two teams in their sights.
McKenna’s side will once again be looking to Liam Delap for inspiration. The 21-year-old striker bagged his seventh league goal of the season as he opened the scoring against Enzo Maresca’s outfit at Portman Road before teeing up former Chelsea man Omari Hutchinson for the second.
It will take a lot for Ipswich to clinch their first back-to-back victories of the campaign though, as they face a Fulham side who are unbeaten in seven matches in the league in a run of games that has seen them face Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea. However, with five of those ties ending all square, Marco Silva’s men find themselves in ninth heading into this one, seven points off the Champions League spots.
The final of the five draws came last weekend against Bournemouth at Craven Cottage as Fulham were pegged back twice by the visitors after they had taken the lead on two occasions through Raul Jimenez and Harry Wilson. The Mexican forward is now the leading scorer in the league for Silva’s men with six goals while Wilson’s header took him level with Alex Iwobi on five.
Victory this afternoon for the hosts would see them leapfrog Aston Villa into eighth, on goal difference, and go just one point behind Bournemouth and two shy of champions Manchester City.
