A fundraiser for a footballer from Southampton in an induced coma in hospital has doubled the original target and raised £20,000.

Jordan Chiedozie, who plays for Bashley FC, was admitted to hospital with 'life-changing injuries' after being hit by a car while trying to fix a flat tyre on the M27.

A vehicle reportedly crashed into him on the hard shoulder late on Saturday while he and club physio Reighan Taylor were travelling back from a Southern League match at Tavistock.

His teammates at Bashley started a fundraiser on GoFundMe and managed to raise £7,000 for the self-employed builder within seven hours.

Club vice-chairman Iain Roberts donated £100, and the current top donation is an anonymous gift of £500.

The fundraiser originally had a target of £10,000, but that was beaten within 12 hours, and the campaign has now cleared its second set goal of £20,000.

Jordan was taken to Southampton Hospital after the incident, suffering multiple broken bones and other physical injuries.

He was put into an induced coma while he received surgical treatment.

Hampshire Constabulary previously described his injuries as “life-changing” and “potentially life-threatening," though said today that there was no update on the ongoing investigation.

A post on the fundraiser, attributed to Bashley FC players, said: "Please do anything you can to support Jordan Chiedozie and his family after the devastating events on Saturday the 1st February.

"As a result of the collision, Jordan suffered life changing and potentially life threatening injuries. Jordan was put into an induced coma when arriving in hospital and while receiving surgical treatment for his injuries.

"Jordan is self employed in the building industry who will obviously not be able to work for the foreseeable future, so any donations will go a long way to helping him during this difficult time."

Local clubs AFC Totton and Sholing FC both pledged their support in posts on social media.

Millbrook FC's first team management donated £150 yesterday to help the cause.

Jordan is a former Stags player, previously appearing for Totton and having stints with Poole Town and the AFC Bournemouth youth teams.

His father John Chiedozie was a winger for Tottenham, Derby County, Notts County and made nine appearances for Nigeria.
