Gareth Southgate has finally confirmed his next move seven months after leaving his role as England manager.

The 54-year-old has enjoyed a nice break away from the limelight, though not without speculation. He has been heavily linked with a return to management, most notably to replace former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag.

Yet the ex-Crystal Palace and Aston Villa man has opted for something very different. Instead he has swapped the touchline for a typewriter as he is set to publish his very own book.

Dear England: Lessons on Leadership will publish later this year. It focuses on "the defining moments that shaped his leadership style, principles that defined his decisions, and the resilience that enabled him to perform under the most intense public scrutiny", says publishers Century.

After hanging up his boots in 2006, Southgate enjoyed a very brief spell in club management with Middlesbrough before he made the switch to the England U21s. Then following the resignation of senior team boss Sam Allardyce in 2016, he took the hot seat on a temporary basis at first, before going on to enjoy a very fruitful eight years.

In the time leading to his departure in July 2024, Southgate led the Lions to to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, the final of Euro 2020 and 2024, as well as a third-place finish in the 2019 UEFA Nations League. All of these experiences and more shaping his new book release.

Southgate explained: "After stepping down as England manager following eight very special years, I’ve been reflecting on what I have lived through and what comes next. Coaching top players and playing against some of the best teams in the world pushed me to operate at the highest level in football.

"Rather than write a memoir of those times I decided to share my experiences in a different way, through the lens of leadership which I hope will provide lessons for anyone who wants to discover their own authentic leadership style."

The book's title, Dear England, was also the name of the letter Southgate wrote to England fans during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was later used by James Graham for his award-winning play which is set to be turned into a screenplay by the BBC, also earmarked for release in 2025.

Ben Brusey, publishing director at Century, added: "Just as Gareth inspired the nation with his England leadership, every page of his book will inspire readers with his characteristic sense of purpose, honesty, resilience and integrity. This will be a landmark leadership book, which I know will be enjoyed by readers for years to come."

Dear England: Lessons on Leadership by Gareth Southgate is set for release on October 23. Further details are yet to be confirmed.
