Gareth Southgate set for new deal to lead England to 2022 World Cup

England manager Gareth Southgate is expected to be given a new, improved contract after impressing at the 2018 Russia World Cup.

The former Middlesbrough boss took his side to semi-final of the World Cup before losing to a Mario Mandzukic injury time winner, narrowly missing out on England’s first final appearance since 1966.

After the match, England fans serenaded the players and manager with Oasis’s hit, ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger,’ in a move that demonstrated an end to the antagonistic or frustrated relationship between managers, players and supporters.

Negotiations are expected to start when Southgate returns from Russia, with England still to play Belgium in the third-place playoff.

It is a chance to exact revenge on the Red Devils after they lost to a Adnan Januzaj goal in what was essentially a dead rubber.

Southgate’s current deal runs to 2020, and includes the Euro 2020 tournament, but the FA intend tying him to a deal which runs to the 2022 World Cup, to be held in Qatar. Little was expected from England in Russia, but they have overachieved by going so far and Southgate is the man credited with the turnaround in fortunes.

A report in the Daily Mail suggests there is no rush to get the deal finalised immediately, but Southgate is in a strong position, and could more than double his wages with a new contract and rising stock.
