Arne Slot got it spot on against Tottenham. I think that is the best we’ve started a game because normally we’re slow starters.

We don’t normally come out of the traps, but the way Tottenham play, you have to match them and we did that really well. That first half display was the best we’ve seen all season by far.

They all played their part going forward. And you take any three points you can get at Tottenham Hotspur. It was a really good performance, in the first half in particular.

The only dampener recently is we’re normally really tight at the back. Conceding three goals, you don’t like to see that. We like clean sheets but we’ve leaked three goals at Newcastle and three goals at Tottenham.

That is a downside of things. The upside is we’ve got four points and it should have been six.

We’re scoring and creating opportunities, but I’m pretty sure the manager won’t be happy with conceding three goals on those two occasions. And Southampton as well, letting them back in the game in the league.

So that’s somewhere where we can actually do better. Tottenham only had four chances and they took three. We had umpteen chances and took six. That is still very, very good. But it could have been better.

Still, we’ll take it all week long. Going forward, you can’t fault anything because it’s tremendous.

We’re now four points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand. We’d have certainly settled for this back in the summer. Big time. You’d rather be four points ahead with a game in hand than four points behind having played a game more. Big time.

It’s been a great first half of the season for Liverpool, and much better than we could have imagined. City falling away like they have, losing yet again, is just a bonus.

Slot has found 'another Firmino'

Luis Diaz is so hard to pick up because he is not a natural centre-forward. He comes off and goes into other positions where the centre-halves don’t want to go. It’s really hard when a player does that.

It’s like what Roberto Firmino used to do. Liverpool have got Jota and Chiesa back now while Nunez is still an option but it’s great having ‘another Firmino’ in there too. He just offers a different dimension.

Jota is a natural centre-forward, so is Nunez. But Diaz poses different questions to defenders and he does it really well. When he goes outwide to the left, Gakpo comes inside. They are working well together, the three of them with Salah too.

And then you have the others who can come off the bench as well at the moment, who are all capable of making a difference if they have to.

Trent would get in the 87/88 Liverpool team!

That cross for Diaz’s first goal, that is just what Trent does. When you’ve got Gary Neville drooling over him, it tells you something, doesn’t it?

The balls he puts into the box, they’re a nightmare for centre-halves to deal with. They’re horrific. But from a centre-forward’s point of view, they’re ridiculous.

Out of all the players in this team, Alexander-Arnold is really the only one who would get into our team from ‘87, ‘88 and ‘89. The balls he puts into the box, you can’t defend them.

As a centre-forward, you’re just rubbing your hands. They all should be. Gakpo, Diaz, Nunez, Jota, with the deliveries he puts in. There is no-one better.
