Gary Neville has compared Trent Alexander-Arnold's current predicament over his future to that of his former Manchester United teammate David Beckham.

Sunday's weekend action at Anfield saw Liverpool draw 2-2 with United, a result which maintained the Reds' six point lead over second placed Arsenal. However, one of the major talking points coming away from the game was the performance of Alexander-Arnold, who gave away possession before Lisandro Martinez's stunning opener for United.

It was also down Alexander-Arnold's flank United then scored their late equalizer through Amad after the Ivorian converted Alejandro Garnacho's cross, something for the which the Reds star received criticism.

And the poor performance from the 27-year-old prompted questions about whether Alexander-Arnold's head has been turned by the speculation around his potential move to Real Madrid. The Liverpool full-back is out of contract in the summer and has been linked with a move to the Spanish capital.

And speaking on Sky Sports, Neville compared Alexander-Arnold's current situation to that of Beckham's, who left Manchester United to join Real Madrid back in 2003. Neville said: "Real Madrid are a very appealing football club.

"Liverpool is an amazing football club so, if he stays, he wins. I didn’t want David Beckham to leave to go to Real Madrid, but he wanted to take that journey and do different things. He wanted to expand his life. I think Trent might have that in him. He’s achieved everything he can at Liverpool."

Liverpool.com says: "Honestly, it would be a bitter pill for Liverpool fans to swallow to see Alexander-Arnold leave, but ultimately his career is short. He has given the Reds everything and has spent the majority of his life as a Liverpool player. While Liverpool has offered him a new deal, the club deserve criticism for letting his contract situation get to this point. They should have tied Alexander-Arnold down to a new deal a season or two ago and failure to do so could see them lose a world class talent."
