Gary Neville struggled to conceal his frustration after Harry Maguire missed a golden opportunity to clinch a victory for Manchester United against Liverpool.

The clash between two fierce rivals delivered plenty of drama after a scoreless but engaging first half. Lisandro Martinez broke the deadlock with a stunning opener, only for Cody Gakpo to equalize moments later with a brilliant strike of his own.

Liverpool took the lead through Mohamed Salah’s composed penalty midway through the second half, seemingly shifting momentum in the Reds’ favor. However, United responded with resilience as Amad Diallo struck a well-taken goal to level the score and set the stage for a thrilling conclusion.

In the dying moments of the match, Maguire had the chance to seal all three points for United. The unmarked defender found himself in prime position near the goal but shockingly fired over the bar from close range.

The final whistle blew with the sides locked at 2-2, but Maguire’s miss is sure to haunt him as Neville, along with United fans, rued what could have been a dramatic and decisive moment at Anfield.

"Oh, my god! I can’t believe it," said Neville. "It may just be offside but Harry Maguire wasn’t to know that. It’s bobbled into him, to be fair, he’s got a bit of work to do to control it, it’s halfway up his shin and that’s it

Giving his analysis of the 2-2 draw, Neville commented: "It was a fantastic match. There have been some disappointments over the years, I think four goalless draws in the last eight between these two.

"Roy Keane, before the game, asked for Manchester United to show some passion at the very least today and they did that in abundance. They were spirited but they also played with real quality.

"I think they deserve more than the 2-2. Harry Maguire, what a chance to win it. Liverpool are still in a great position for the title. It’s been a proper match."
