Gary Neville has explained why he is still backing Arsenal to win the 2024/25 Premier League title over Liverpool. Arne Slot's side are heavy favourites and will enter the new year eight points clear of their nearest challengers which is currently, to the surprise of many, Nottingham Forest.

The Gunners can go up to second, however, by avoiding defeat to Brentford on New Year's Day with it also possible the gap to Liverpool can close to six points. In terms of upcoming fixtures, Mikel Arteta's side have four far from straightforward league games in January.

Following the trip to Brentford, Arsenal face Brighton away from home before returning to Emirates Stadium to play Tottenham and Aston Villa, two teams they didn't beat in those same fixtures last season. As for Liverpool, following a clash against Manchester United, the Reds play Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Ipswich in league action.

Despite the more favourable fixtures coming for Liverpool and the momentum built up, which shows no sign of slowing down, Neville is still of the belief Arsenal will win the league for one key reason. "Liverpool are in great form and are massive favourites but there is still a long way to go," he said on Sky Sports.

"Arsenal have been through the mill in the last couple of years Sometimes, when you win your first title, it doesn’t happen in the most expected way, and things can happen." Though Arteta looks to have lost Saka for a number of months, a particular Liverpool injury blow would be worse in the opinion of Neville.

On what could stop them winning it, he said: "[Virgil] van Dijk [getting injured]. That is the thing that sticks out to me. If he got injured I think it would be a completely different story." The Dutchmen and Mohamed Salah have both played every Premier League game this season but either missing out would certainly impact Liverpool.
