Gary Neville has left Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah out of his all-time Premier League starting XI — leaving Jamie Carragher aghast at his decision.

"He 100 per cent starts," Carragher said on the It's Called Soccer podcast. "At the end of this season, Salah is going to be the Player of the Year. We all agree on that.

"No player in history has ever won the PFA Player of the Year award three times. He is going to win it for the third time. It's never been done before. We are talking about an absolute legend of our game not just Premier League, but all time.

"Thierry Henry and Mo Salah, they go in first. And there is one other player. I've said this before. Salah is better in the Premier League than what Ronaldo was. He was amazing for Real Madrid but Salah is a better Premier League player. That's why he goes in."

"It's not recency bias," Neville argued. "It's a guy called Cristiano Ronaldo. It's a guy called Alan Shearer. It's a guy called Thierry Henry. It's a guy called Wayne Rooney. They were all decent players.

"Salah is in that class but if I'm looking at a team of 4-4-2 or 4-3-3, I'm thinking Ronaldo, Shearer, Henry, Rooney — the best players I've played with up front. Ronaldo is one of the best players to have played the game and ever lived.

"Ronaldo played in the Premier League for five or six years and that's a long enough sample of evidence. He deserves to be in that mix. Salah should be in the conversation but Shearer in the greatest goalscorer, Henry would be the left, and Ronaldo on the right.

"Ronaldo played quite a lot of times on the right wing for Manchester United in front of me and Shearer or Henry could be up front but that would mean someone would need to be on the left. Even if I'm picking a team that is balanced, I'd still pick Ronaldo on the right."

Salah has scored 182 goals in the Premier League. He will overtake Sergio Aguero by the end of this season and probably Andrew Cole too. If he pens a contract extension at Anfield, he is not that far behind Wayne Rooney on 208 and Harry Kane on 213. Shearer with 260 will be pretty hard to overtake.

Liverpool.com says: Salah should 100 per cent be in the team. Ronaldo was clearly world-class for Manchester United but his best years were in Spain. Salah has been in England for almost eight years, scoring 20-plus goals in each of his seasons. He has dragged the Reds over the line at times and by the time he leaves, will have the trophies to back up his place in the side.
