Germany vs Hungary LIVE! Euro 2024 result, match stream and latest updates today
Goals from Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gundogan gave Germany a comfortable 2-0 win over Hungary in Group A on Wednesday that made the host nation set to be the first side to qualify for the knockout stage at Euro 2024.
With two wins out of two, the Germans look certain to be at least among the four best third-placed teams, and they will finish in the top two of the group if Scotland fail to beat Switzerland later on tonight. That scenario would also prevent Hungary from finishing in the top two.
Musiala gave the Germans the lead in the 22nd minute after some horrendous Hungarian defending led to the ball being poked into his path by Gundogan, and the 21-year-old needed no second invitation, hammering the ball in via a defender.
Roland Sallai had a goal ruled out in first-half stoppage time for Hungary and they wasted a number of other decent chances before Gundogan scored in the 67th minute with a simple finish after a superb build-up to wrap up the three points.

It is not quite signed, sealed and delivered for reaching the last-16 for Germany.
But only a wild turn of events can see them drop to third place and then also finish outside the top-ranked sides.
Scotland failing to beat Switzerland would confirm their spot tonight.

Let’s see how Hungary come out after that blow, they’re staring elimination in the face here with zero points and a minus-four goal difference.

This tournament has seen plenty of near-miss upsets and a couple of shocks actually pulled off, too.
Put this one firmly in the ‘maybe’ category for now as Hungary look decent in attack - they’ve had seven shots to Germany’s eight and both hit the target three times.
They aren’t over reliant on Dominik Szoboszlai either, although the Liverpool man has looked decent.

First shot on target for Germany, Peter Gulacsi comfortably holds a dribbler from Kai Havertz after he cuts in on his left foot.

Superb atmosphere in Stuttgart

We saw the Hungarian fan march earlier.
Thousands of supporters gathered at the Mittlerer Schlossgarten near the Stuttgart Arena for a specially choreographed display, organised by supporter group Carpathian Brigade '09. Fans chanted while holding banners, lit flares and smoke bombs as they slowly marched in unison to the stadium.
But there was also strong representation from the German fans, keen not to be outdone by their more eye-catching rivals.
Key match-ups
16:37 , Marc Mayo
Germany keeping a lid on Dominik Szoboszlai could go a long way to their victory in this game.
Robert Andrich and Joshua Kimmich will be key to stopping him down the left wing but the Liverpool man should float around the pitch with freedom. If Hungary can get Bournemouth wing-back Milos Kerkez bombing on and causing Kimmich issues, that will open up space for Szoboszlai.
Germany will hope to test 34-year-old centre-back Atilla Fiola, he usually plays on the right and plies his trade with Hungarian side Fehervar.
RB Leipzig’s Willi Orban will be used to this level of opposition but the same can’t be said for his defensive partners, with Fiola on one side and Marton Dardai on the other. He plays for German second-tier team Hertha Berlin.

Hungarian target man to let football do the talking
16:25 , Marc Mayo
A goal for Hungary striker Martin Adam would be the perfect response to negative online comments about his appearance, says Hungary boss Marco Rossi.
The 29-year-old came on late in Hungary's opening Euro 2024 Group A defeat by Switzerland, with many on social media highlighting the appearance of the long-bearded 6-feet-3-inch player, who weighs around 86 kilogrammes. Many were jovial and positive, but naturally some took it too far.
Adam, nicknamed the ‘Hungarian Viking’, said he usually laughs off comments about his build, but his manager Rossi said personal attacks were unacceptable.
“We see the pictures or photographs, the idiots at the keyboard... bravely at their computer - as long as it's that, it's acceptable because we cannot control the minds of these people," he stated.
"But when online people offend the players, well that’s unacceptable. That's disrespectful.
"So it’s very unpleasant what happened to him. His body, build is what it is since his birth, so I truly hope he will score at this European Championship. That would be very rewarding and satisfying for him.
"But I think he was unaffected because he's an exceptional lad and we are very happy to have him with us."

A big game to follow
16:20 , Marc Mayo
It has been some start to Euro 2024 and the drama kept coming in the early kick-off.
Croatia fell behind early on against Albania but looked to have snatched three vital points with a late Andrej Kramaric goal followed up a minute later by an unlucky Klaus Gjasula own goal.
And yet, Gjasula made amends in the 95th minute to make it 2-2 and leave both sides with a point.
How can our game top that?!

'Pressure on Hungary'
16:15 , Marc Mayo
Hungary will be under greater pressure with the threat of elimination hanging over them than hosts Germany when they face each other in their Euro 2024 Group A match on Wednesday, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has claimed.
"I had put Scotland and Hungary on a very similar level," Nagelsmann told a press conference. "It depends how we play tomorrow. Hungary are under a bit more pressure than we are after the first match."
"I think they have to be a bit more aggressive than against Switzerland as they could potentially be out of the tournament."
He added: "We have analysed the Hungarians and have a clear idea how we will play. It is about winning the game tomorrow. We saw their first match against Swiss where it was a game of two halves. Hungary deserved more than they got in the end.
"In the qualifiers Hungary were the second-best team when it came to creating or converting chances from set pieces.
"They play a good transition game. They have strikers who are powerful in the air. They play with precise crosses. They are very dangerous."

Hungary must be perfect, says coach
15:45 , Marc Mayo
Hungary will need to play a perfect game to get at least a point against Euro 2024 hosts Germany as they seek to make amends for the way they lost to Switzerland in their Group A opener, coach Marco Rossi said ahead of the game.
The Italian said it was the first time in four years that he was ashamed of his players after a complacent Hungary were two goals down to the Swiss by half-time on Saturday, eventually losing 3-1.
However, Rossi insisted that his team were determined to put in the kind of performance on Wednesday that would restore pride and keep their last-16 hopes alive ahead of a final group game against Scotland.
“We've paid for these [mistakes] in the first game and tomorrow we are playing Germany which, in my opinion, is the toughest rival, toughest team to play now, but we will do our best," Rossi told a press conference.
“We know on paper the German team is better than us. This should further motivate us, allowing us to give our very best show.
“Hopefully we can grasp a point tomorrow and that will allow us, I hope, to qualify for the next round. But this will call for the perfect match, all those playing must give 100 per cent.”
Hungary are joint bottom of Group A with Scotland on zero points, ahead of the Scots only on goal difference, so they need a positive result if they are to reach the knockout stage for the first time since Euro 2016.
“We seek some sort of comeback. Because for the first time in four years, since November 2020, I was ashamed of my team after the first half,” he added. “But inevitably the first half affected the final outcome. And I and my players have this sensation right now that we really want to show what we are truly worth.”

Score prediction
14:50 , Marc Mayo
Julian Nagelsmann’s side will definitely head into the game as stern favourites, having thrashed Scotland and as the hosts.
The Hungarians are a well-organised side and took four points from a possible six off Germany during June 2022’s Nations League double-header, but anything other than a Germany win this time out would be an almighty shock.
Germany to win, 1-0.
How we reckon Hungary will set up

Predicted Hungary XI: Gulacsi; Lang, Orban, Szalai; Bolla, A. Nagy, Schafer, Kerkez; Sallai, Szoboszlai, Varga
Hungary team news
14:36 , Marc Mayo
Hungary played a 5-2-2-1 formation against Switzerland and are likely to use that again, opting for a back five to limit the attacking spaces for Germany to exploit.
Marco Rossi was distinctly unimpressed by his team’s display and could be tempted to make changes for what looks like a very tough assignment indeed against the Germans.
Rapid Vienna’s Bendeguz Bolla is among those who could come in if Hungary opt for a more defensive approach in a bid to try and contain the rampant hosts.
Our prediction for the German line-up
14:32 , Marc Mayo
Predicted Germany XI: Neuer; Kimmich, Rudiger, Tah, Mittelstadt; Andrich, Kroos; Musiala, Gundogan, Wirtz; Havertz
Germany team news

Germany are likely to persist with their front three of Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz flanking Arsenal striker Kai Havertz, all of whom scored against Scotland in the 5-1 win on Friday night.
There are no reported injury worries for the hosts, who should be unchanged.
