What Ghana need to qualify for AFCON knockout stage last-16

Ghana are facing yet another early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations after a truly remarkable finale to Monday evening's action.

In the conclusion to Group B, the Black Stars were set to sail into the knockout stages as the clock hit 90 minutes, leading Mozambique. 2-0 as Egypt were being held 1-1 by Cape Verde.

Within two minutes, Mozambique had pulled one back from the penalty spot. As Ghana regrouped, at the same time in the other game Moustafa Mohamed scored to put Egypt into the lead, into second place in the Group and the automatic qualification spot.

There were suggestions of handball in the build-up so VAR took a look, and by the time the goal was awarded Mozambique had stunned Ghana with a remarkable equaliser, their second goal in as many injury-time minutes. Egypt then just had to hold on during 12 agonising minutes of added time to secure the win.

Ghana were seconds away from a last-16 spot and are now facing elimination. But all hope is not yet over ahead of the tonight's Group C games with Ghana holding on to hope of finishing as one of the four best third-placed teams.

Third-placed rankings as it stands

(The top four qualify for last-16. Teams level on points will be split via goal difference, then goals scored and, finally, on a disciplinary tiebreak)

How can Ghana qualify for last-16?

Ivory Coast and Namibia, should they finish third in Group E, have those spots wrapped up. Group D's third-place team are also already through as Algeria face Mauritania and either would finish with a better record than Ghana.

So that leaves one spot left for Ghana, Zambia, Tanzania and Cameroon.

What Ghana need?

Ghana are in the weakest position so need THREE results to go their way. Anything else and they are out.

  • Cameroon must not beat Gambia.

  • Tanzania must not beat DR Congo.

  • Zambia must lose to Morocco.

All eyes on Gambia v Cameroon at 5pm GMT, then.
