Felix Gill believes he is going from strength to strength despite falling short in the first round of Wimbledon Qualifying.

The Redditch 22-year-old came up against top 150 player Emilio Nava and lost 6-4 6-1 at the Community Sport Centre in Roehampton.

It took until the closing stages of the first set for Nava to break Gill’s serve and, after sealing the first, he raced through the second to secure progress to the second round.

With a career-high ranking of 306 achieved in May, Gill believes the sky is the limit when it comes to his career.

He said: “It was a good performance and a tight first set, I thought it was quite even until the final game where he took it away from me and then that really changed the match when he got the break.

“In the second set, I thought he was reading my serve a lot better and getting a bit more used to the grass.

“It’s the level you want to be at, where these guys are so it’s always a good experience, I’ve been playing a lot of Challengers around this level and I’m around it all year.

“It wasn’t a surprise to play him but he’s a great player.

“I’m definitely improving, last year was a tough year but I’m working hard every day and trying to get the best.”

Gill is on the LTA’s Pro Scholarship Programme presented by Lexus, the highest level of support for developing players aged 16-24, designed to help them crack the top 100.

He recently entered qualifying as a wild card at the LTA’s Lexus Ilkley Trophy and battled to three sets but ultimately fell to a 6-3 6-7(3) 6-1 defeat against Dominic Stricker.

Next up, Gill will head to Valencia, where he will continue to try improving his form and his ranking.

He added: “I wasn’t playing at a good level, last year, it was a difficult period.

“Me and my coach were trying our best every day, we got some good results and finished the year really strong, it was a difficult year but we’ve done really well since.”
