On-loan Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili endured a tough evening as Valencia fell to a heavy defeat at the hands of Barcelona. Mamardashvili was signed by the Reds last summer in a £30million deal before being loaned back to the Spanish club until the end of the season.

On Sunday, Mamardashvili started in goal once again for Valencia. However, the Georgia international was on the receiving end of a 7-1 defeat at the hands of Barcelona, a result that leaves the La Liga outfit in 19th place in the Spanish top-flight standings and in the relegation zone.

Valencia found themselves 5-0 down at half-time thanks to goals from Frenkie de Jong, Ferran Torres, Raphinha and a brace from Fermin Lopez. Robert Lewandowski and an own goal from Cesar Tarrega rounded off the scoring for Barca, with Hugo Duro providing the consolation goal for Valencia.

Valencia appointed Carlos Corberan as their new manager back in December with the club at risk of securing relegation from La Liga. The former West Bromwich Albion boss gave an honest take on his new team's heavy defeat to Barcelona.

"We didn't compete in the match," Corberan told Marca. "I'm the first to criticise myself. As a team in general we weren't up to the level and intensity that the match demanded. We were outclassed by a rival that was far superior from start to finish. That's not the image we want to give on a football pitch."

"When you face Barca you have doubts about whether to play with four or five at the back," Corberan added. "With four we couldn't sustain the second line's attacks.

"The feeling of overcoming had to be adjusted in some way. With a line of five we thought that was the way to go. But they continued to create problems for us."

"What I think has happened is that we have not imposed ourselves in pressure situations. When you press and lose the duel, the situation you concede is disadvantageous."

"We have to digest the pain we feel. We have not represented Valencia at the level we should have. It is painful. It requires a deep analysis. We have to find solutions to compete. From there, we must look for a reaction. This defeat can only increase the desire to work."

Mamardashvili will link up with Liverpool at the end of the season following the conclusion of his loan spell. The 24-year-old will compete with Alisson Becker, Caoimhin Kelleher and Vitezslav Jaros in the goalkeeping department at Anfield ahead of next season.
