Girls' football team make history by being the first in Britain to win a boys' league - and were unbeaten in the league
An all-girls junior football team has become the first in Britain to win a boys' league - after joining because they had no-one to play.
SB Frankfort under-12s even went unbeaten in the season winning 13 of their 16 games this season, drawing the other three - and scoring 73 goals.
They were so successful they have been declared champions of the DJM boy's league two games before the end of the season.
The girls from the team based in Plymouth, Devon, are believed to be the first in the UK to win a boys league.
The achievement caps a remarkable rise after they were only formed four years ago as there were no other female sides in the area.
Head coach James Brown-Tunnell said: "A fantastic achievement for the whole squad. Everyone has played their part this season.
"This has been four years in the making and I couldn't be happier.
"The main aim by joining the boys league was for the girls to be challenged, so it’s amazing to end up league winners.
"There may have been doubters, but the girls have proved they deserve to play against boys on a weekly basis.
"We have two league games left and we will approach them the same way. Our aim is to stay undefeated and then move on to the league cup final on the 12th May.
"Thanks to all the parents and my wife Gemma for their support, it's a team effort from everyone."
Assistant coach John Preston said: "It has been a great season and we have had great games against some fantastic teams who have praised the girls both on and off the pitch.
"We have been told many times that the girls can’t, but this proves ours girls definitely CAN!"
The girls, sponsored by KF Kitchens at Faraday Mill and whose home ground is Weston Mill Oak Villa, first formed four years ago but had no other local all girls teams.
