'Who that is, God knows' - Everton have a major headache for the final week of the transfer window
Everton have got a major headache for the final week of the winter transfer window
It was a huge disappointment to see Dominic Calvert-Lewin go off injured early on at Brighton & Hove Albion. We’ve got some huge games coming up including the Derby and given Dom’s record against Liverpool, you’d want him to be fit for that game.
There were question marks over whether he might even leave in this window but the injury should mean he’s with us at least until the end of the season. If it’s a hamstring, we could be talking a minimum of six weeks out, fingers crossed Dom won’t be out for too long but it did look a bad one.

It’s really bad timing for Everton Football Club, for David Moyes and obviously for Dom himself. Kevin Thelwell and the recruitment team will be lining up targets and discussing them with the manager.
Moyes spoke about that before the trip to Brighton when he outlined that the players had already been scouted but he wants to make sure they’ve got the right credentials in terms of the attitude and the mindset to wear the royal blue jersey.
Moyes understands what the club is about and if he can put his two pence in and get his ideas over to Thelwell about the type of characters he wants to bring in, then even better so they can make more correct decisions than bad ones. Dom is now injured and Beto is the only fit striker at the club with Armando Broja and Youssef Chermiti both already out.
Nine times out of 10 strikers are the most-expensive players to try and bring in. We know that the January window is a difficult one at the best of times but whatever recruitment we’ve been looking at, it now seems that a striker has got to be the number one priority.
We’ve got to bring someone to the football club. Who that is, God knows, because it’s going to be a difficult job.
They’re going to be expensive, and if we can’t loan them then our hands are going to be tied. The selling club will also know that we’re desperate so that makes it increasingly tough for Thelwell and the money men from The Friedkin Group in any negotiations and the ball is in their court now.
The season is still far from over and we want to get away from the relegation zone as soon as possible. I’m confident in Moyes’ experience to bring the right man to the club though.
