Liverpool could find themselves in the market for a new right-back this summer, should Trent Alexander-Arnold leave the club at the end of his contract. The Reds vice-captain is yet to sign a new deal and is wanted by Real Madrid on a Bosman transfer.

The La Liga giants had an approach for the defender rejected by Liverpool on the eve of the January transfer window. And while they aren’t expected to make a fresh move for the Reds vice-captain, he is still free to sign a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs after entering the final six months of his current deal.

Should Alexander-Arnold depart, Conor Bradley is well-placed to step up and replace the England international. But that hasn’t stopped Liverpool from being linked with moves for other right-backs if their vice-captain does move on.

They have regularly linked with a move for Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich, who is also out of contract at the end of the season, while Jeremie Frimpong has also been touted as a possible target.

And Frimpong has claimed that he was once previously on the verge of signing for the Reds - only to be forced to pull the plug on the deal and sign for Man City instead.

The Bayer Leverkusen star came through City’s academy, having joined the club at the age of nine. However, he had chosen to join Liverpool rather than a move to the Etihad after being scouted by both clubs, only for logistical reasons to scupper the move.

“I was playing striker and scored a hat-trick in a final, I won player of the tournament,” the 24-year-old recalled to Rising Ballers. “There were scouts there like Liverpool, Bolton, Man City and a lot more.

“But I chose Liverpool first. I was going to sign for them but back then, driving wasn’t a thing, my family wasn’t driving like that and it was far.

“And obviously, Man City was local so I tried Man City next and it made more sense. It was 15 minutes on the bus, so yeah.”

Frimpong made his professional debut for Celtic in September 2019 as an 18-year-old, weeks after leaving the Scottish giants. Had he joined Liverpool as a nine-year-old, he would have seen Alexander-Arnold already break into the first team prior to his own senior breakthrough.
