Golden Boot: Will Harry Kane beat Romelu Lukaku to World Cup top scorer of 2018?

An unquestionable sign of world-class quality and international prestige, there are few better indicators of greatness than when a player manages to score more goals than anyone else at the World's greatest sporting event.

With Eusebio, Garrincha and the original Ronaldo among its previous winners, the Golden Boot has kept company with some of the best footballers of all time, and it's England's Harry Kane that currently leads the way at the 2018 Russia World Cup.

Six-goal Kane has proven himself priceless, scoring in each of the games he's played in so far, demonstrating killer instinct and nerves of steel on his country's path to the quarter finals.

Belgium's Romelu Lukaku, currently in second place alongside Russia's Denis Cheryshev, has done his best to keep pace with Kane by scoring four goals of his own. French sensation Kylian Mbappe also lurks behind on three, alongside Russia's Artem Dzyuba, and Uruguay's Edinson Cavani.

Lukaku failed to score during his team's 2-1 victory over Brazil on Friday, while Mbappe also didn't make it on to the scoresheet as France defeated Uruguay 2-0. The result also meant Uruguay's Cavani, who was injured for the game, will play no more part in this tournament.

Cheryshev surged into second place by scoring against Croatia but now his tournament is over after Russia lost.

Given England's favourable draw, and a World Cup riddled with penalties, Kane is currently odds-on with the bookies to take home the award.

His current tally of six would have been enough to win it in nine of the past 10 World Cups,  and Kane has already equalled compatriot Gary Lineker's tally from 1986. However, he's a long way off the record set by France's Just Fontaine in 1958, who managed an astonishing 13 goals.

While any player would trade in all their goals for the World Cup trophy itself, the Golden Boot sits proudly on the mantelpiece of those who are brilliant enough to win it.
