Golf club offers support to neighbouring clubs after 'devastating' floods
A golf club is offering assistance to neighbouring clubs which were impacted by "devastating" New Year's Day floods.
Bury Golf Club has announced it will offer members of surrounding clubs affected by the River Mersey's overflow the chance to play on its course at a discounted rate.
This gesture of goodwill is aimed at supporting the local golfing community in Greater Manchester during a "challenging time".
The floods "left a trail of destruction", particularly impacting the golf clubs situated along the River Mersey's path.
This includes Northenden, Sale, Didsbury, Withington, Flixton, Chorlton, and Ashton-on-Mersey golf courses, which were among the most affected.
Bury Golf Club's initiative will allow members of these clubs to play at their course for £15 per round, which is the same rate offered to guests of members.
Chairman Mark Howarth said: "Golf is more than just a sport, it’s a community.
"At Bury Golf Club, we feel a deep sense of responsibility to support our neighbouring clubs in their time of need.
"We hope this small gesture provides a practical benefit and reminds us of the strength of our shared camaraderie."
The club's gesture of goodwill will be in place until March 31, giving affected club members "ample time" to take advantage of the offer.
To access the discounted rate, participating golfers must present proof of membership from an affected club.
The £15 rate will give players access to Bury Golf Club’s 18-hole course, practice facilities, and clubhouse.
The club has also extended an invitation to other clubs and organisations to support those impacted by the floods.
Mr Howarth added: "This is a time for unity.
"We’re stronger together, and by supporting one another, we’ll emerge from this adversity even more connected and resilient."
Bury Golf Club, which was established in 1890, is known for its course designed by Dr Alister Mackenzie and for its "commitment to supporting the broader golfing community".
