Gossip: Chelsea 'front-runners' to sign Lewandowski, Man Utd 'willing to pay £97m for Icardi' and more

Transfer target? Roman Abramovich wants to bring Robert Lewandowski to Chelsea

This Alvaro Morata thing isn’t really working out, is it? No goals for Chelsea in 2018; dropped for the biggest game of the season against Barcelona; outshone by Romelu Lukaku at Old Trafford. That’s what £58m gets you these days. A good centre-forward, but not necessarily a great one.

The problem is, Chelsea want a great one. And it looks like they are giving up on Alvaro and trying to find him somewhere else.

According to the Sun, the Blues are the “front-runners” to sign Bayern Munich’s goalscoring phenomenon Robert Lewandowski for a “hefty fee” this summer.

The Poland legend is apparently getting “itchy feet” after eight seasons of scoring goals for fun in the Bundesliga and cantering to the league title year after year. He wants something a bit more interesting than that and is “flirting” with the idea of playing in the Premier League.

The Sun has evidence too. Firstly, it claims that Lewandowski has just signed up with Pini Zahavi, who was the original “Super Agent” back when Mino Raiola was still serving up plates of Spaghetti Carbonara in his dad’s restaurant.

The Israeli has had a lower profile recently, presumably because all his main clients are on the verge of retirement, but he is getting back into the game with Lewandowski.

Secondly, the Sun reveals that Lewandowski’s wife Anna was spotted “familiarising herself with London” when she arrived on a “shopping expedition” last week, during which she purchased some “clothes”.

Clothes to make her blend in with fellow Londoners in anticipation of the family’s big move to the capital? It’s all starting to add up.

Chelsea would not have a free run at Lewandowski, of course, with Manchester United also likely to revive their interest in the 29-year-old after being linked with him for the past five years.

However Blackburn Rovers, who were on the verge of signing Lewy in 2010 before he moved to Borussia Dortmund, are probably out of the running this time.

Man Utd set to smash transfer record for Icardi

United have other irons in the fire too, such as Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi. The Mirror – via Corriere dello Sport – says the Red Devils are willing to trigger the striker’s £97m release clause.

They would face competition from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain for the 25-year-old Argentine, who is seemingly very popular despite that time he had an affair with his team-mate’s wife, who is now his agent. It’s complicated.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are set to take on Man Utd and Man City for the Napoli midfielder Jorginho (Mirror). Jurgen Klopp has targeted the 26-year-old Italian who sounds like a Brazilian amid continued fears that contract rebel Emre Can is set to quit Anfield in the summer.

Elsewhere, Tottenham are planning a £10m summer move for Sheffield United’s 20-year-old striker David Brooks (Sun), AC Milan are interested in Swansea City’s South Korean midfielder Ki Sung-yueng (Calciomercato) and Thierry Henry has revealed that he is “interested” in replacing Arsene Wenger as Arsenal manager (Express).
