Gossip: Chelsea 'launch' huge late bid for Oblak and Man United submit 'final offer' for Alderweireld

We have entered the final week of the summer transfer window.

If you had a pound for every goalkeeper Chelsea have been linked with this summer, you’d have roughly £17. Which, admittedly, is not a very impressive amount of money. Certainly nowhere near as impressive as the amount the Blues are reportedly set to pay for the latest shot-stopper they are being tipped to sign.

Spanish paper Mundo Deportivo says the west Londoners are set to pay the £89m release clause in the contract of Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, who is poised to swap cities with Real Madrid-bound Blues keeper Thibaut Courtois.

With the Belgian going AWOL in order to force a move to the Bernabeu, the 25-year-old Oblak has been lined up as the top choice to replace him. Chelsea will allegedly activate the Slovenian’s buyout clause “within 24 hours”, although even if this is true it doesn’t mean they will get him.

Atletico have proved adept at keeping hold of their top players in recent seasons, especially up against teams who aren’t even in the Champions League. The Blues may have a better chance luring players from the Championship, and the Star says they are considering a £25m bid for Stoke City’s Jack Butland in case their Oblak raid fails.

Man Utd still pursuing Toby Alderweireld

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy knows a desperate buyer when he sees one, and he will rubbing his hands with glee at his latest interactions with Manchester United.

The Red Devils have been pursuing Spurs centre-back Toby Alderweireld all summer long, but they have been unwilling to meet the Belgian’s £60m price tag. However, setbacks trying to sign other defensive targets mean the 29-year-old may be Jose Mourinho’s only viable option left.

The Mirror says United have returned to Levy with a “final offer” for Alderweireld, for whom they have so far refused to pay more than £40m. But with three days of the transfer window left, they may soon be forced to come round to Daniel’s way of thinking.

Luka Modric key to West Ham deal

According to Italian paper Calciomercato, United are also preparing a “huge bid” for Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic before deadline day, but that would seem a far lower priority for Mourinho at the moment. (Unless he’s planning to sell Paul Pogba to Barcelona, which the Mail says he might be.)

“West Ham are hoping Inter Milan succeed with their bid to land Luka Modric so that they can sign Danny Drinkwater from Chelsea,” is the confusing sentence that begins an article in the Mirror.

Apparently, if Inter sign Modric from Real Madrid, they will sell fellow midfielder Matias Vecino to the Blues, allowing the Hammers to sign fellow fellow midfielder Drinkwater. Alternatively, West Ham could just keep things simple and sign former Aston Villa midfielder Carlos Sanchez from Fiorentina (Mirror).

Elsewhere, Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama is a target for Roma (Le Repubblica), Leicester are in talks with Dinamo Zagreb over a £13m deal for 21-year-old centre-back Filip Benkovic (Mail) and Everton are set to snap up 25-year-old Brazil winger Bernard on a free transfer (Mail). Of all the men in Brazil, he must surely have the least sexy name.
