Gossip: Allegri 'tells friends' he wants to replace Wenger at Arsenal, Liverpool set for £40m swoop and more

Max Allegri reportedly wants to replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal next season.
Max Allegri reportedly wants to replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal next season.

Arsenal fans may get a nice little confidence boost if they read the Sun on Sunday, which claims that Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri is “ready to say yes” to the Gunners if Arsene Wenger leaves this summer.

The 50-year-old Italian has apparently “told pals” he is keen on the Gunners job. Because Max Allegri and the Sun have loads of friends in common, you see – that’s how they know.

You may wonder why the manager of one of Europe’s top sides would want to swap all that for Arsenal, but after winning six successive Serie A titles, the truth is that he has probably got a bit bored with it.

Although he has publicly ruled out a move to England, the Sun claims that Allegri has been “learning English”. Maybe they should put some of their reporters on the same course.

Liverpool have found their new goalkeeper

Members of the goalkeepers’ union are not supposed to take any pleasure in other members’ misfortune – and Jack Butland seems like a nice young man who would not do that anyway – but the Stoke City number one would nevertheless have been interested to observe the struggles of Joe Hart and Loris Karius yesterday.

Hart’s unhappy comeback for West Ham, which involved him mis-controlling regulation backpasses and spilling his saves into the feet of opposition strikers, may well have finally done for his England chances this summer.

Meanwhile, the slightly unlucky Karius found himself wrongfooted by a Marcus Rashford strike as Liverpool’s defensive frailties reared their unattractive head again at Old Trafford.

And not that Butland would have enjoyed any of this, but it could all help things turn out rather nicely for him.

Not only is he the man most likely to benefit from Hart’s ongoing rubbishness in Russia, he could also be the man chosen to solve Liverpool’s long-standing problem between the sticks.

The Sunday Mirror reports that Jurgen Klopp has lost patience with his goalkeepers and is “closing in” on a £40m deal to sign Butland this summer. Arsenal are also interested in the 24-year-old shotstopper, but obviously he would rather not go there.

All we need now is for Stoke to avoid relegation and it could be the summer of Butland’s dreams (although as he’s going to leave the Potters anyway, that part is probably less important).

Man United to beat Chelsea to defender capture

A Sunday wouldn’t be complete with some mouth-watering Manchester United gossip, and the Sunday People is happy to oblige by claiming that the Red Devils are set to beat Chelsea to the signing of Alex Sandro.

United are willing to pay £70m for the Juve left-back and double his already-quite-high £145,000-a-week wages. To soften the financial outlay, they are attempting to send Matteo Darmian to Turin in part-exchange, which should save them a couple of million quid.

Luke Shaw would still remain at Old Trafford though – the People adds that Jose Mourinho wants to keep him and add Sandro as competition.

Elsewhere, AC Milan are set to swoop for Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere if he fails to agree a new contract at the Emirates (Sunday Express), Christian Benteke’s “advisers” are planning a summer move to the Chinese Super League for the Crystal Palace striker, with the Eagles are more than happy to let him leave for £20m (Sun on Sunday) and Paris Saint-Germain are not open to selling star forward Neymar to Real Madrid or Barcelona (Sky Sports). But if push came to shove, they wouldn’t mind selling him to West Brom.
