Gossip: Liverpool linked with Casillas and Donnarumma, Jesus 'snubs Man City contract', Umtiti 'goes cryptic' on Man Utd interest

Whenever Liverpool finally assemble a team good enough to end their 28-year (and counting) title drought, the players in the squad will invariably be feted as Anfield heroes and set off on a raucous open-top bus parade around the city.

But when you try to imagine this celebratory scene, no matter how many variations you come up with it is physically impossible to see Simon Mignolet or Loris Karius aboard that bus. The human mind is not capable of this.

They are both decent goalkeepers and nice men, but the idea of the Reds winning the Premier League title with either between the sticks just seems implausible.

Jurgen Klopp has sorted out his attack, his midfield and even some of his defence, but this summer his number one priority will be a number one.

Today, he is linked with two keepers at opposite ends of the experience scale. The Express says the Liverpool manager will turn to Iker Casillas, the 36-year-old Porto goalie, as the man to bring solidity to the small area of uncertainty directly behind Dejan Lovren.

The Real Madrid legend was given a standing ovation by the Kop when Liverpool played Porto in the Champions League last month. A lovely gesture, but it could backfire on those generous Reds fans if the increasingly shaky veteran ends up at Anfield as a result.

A more exciting purchase would be AC Milan’s 19-year-old shot-stopping sensation Gianluigi Donnarumma, who the Mirror says could become the Reds’ number one “for the next decade”.

Actually it’s not strictly the Mirror who said that; they were just quoting Steve Nicol – the former Reds defender who was part of the team that won that last league title in 1990.

Klopp’s first-choice to replace Mignolet/Karius is believed to be Roma star Alisson. But unfortunately for him, Spanish paper Marca reports that Real Madrid are sniffing around the Brazilian – and they normally get what they sniff.

Jesus rejects new Man City deal

Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus has turned down a new £90,000-a-week contract, claims the Mail. But it’s not as dramatic as it sounds because the 20-year-old only apparently wants City to raise their offer to £100,000 – a demand which must have prompted much mirth in the Etihad boardroom.

Meanwhile, the Express says Manchester United are bracing themselves for a “double swoop” by Valencia for two of their players. But it’s only Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini, so Jose Mourinho probably won’t be that bothered.

And Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti has given a “cryptic response” to a question about United’s alleged interest in him (Mirror). When asked about it, he replied, “Joker.”

Elsewhere, Newcastle are planning to hijack Everton’s move for 24-year-old Besiktas midfielder Oguzhan Ozyakup (Turkish Football), Gabby Agbonlahor will end his 17-year spell at Aston Villa this summer, even if the club get promoted (Telegraph) and Everton are set to replace Sam Allardyce with 45-year-old Shakhtar Donetsk manager Paulo Fonseca because they want a “younger man” at the helm (Mirror). It takes a lot to dent Big Sam’s self-esteem, but that’s gotta hurt.
