Gossip: Real Madrid 'want Salah', Klopp 'targets Mahrez', Newcastle 'offer Hart World Cup lifeline'

Mahrez, Hart and Salah all seem to be targets
Mahrez, Hart and Salah all seem to be targets

Dear Football Teams. We’ve got a little lad here who is looking for game. Will you let him play? He’s a lovely blonde-haired lad with bags of energy. He’s got all his own kit, he won’t cost you a penny in transfer fees and – best of all – he is willing to play exclusively in goal! He loves it!

Oh, and he’s also got 75 England caps. His name’s Joe. Can he play please?

You’d think it would be easy for England’s number one goalkeeper to find an English football team that will play him, but Joe Hart has been finding it very difficult.

Discarded by Manchester City, dropped by West Ham, the 30-year-old’s hopes of turning out for his country in this summer’s World Cup are hanging by a thread. Can someone, anyone help him?

Apparently yes. Newcastle can.

The Mirror reports that the Magpies are eyeing a “surprise January move” for the London Stadium outcast and have “made discreet enquiries” about bringing him to the north-east and providing the first-team football he so desperately craves.

Toon boss Rafa Benitez wants Hart on loan until the end of the season, which is tricky because Hart is already on loan at the Hammers until the end of the season.

So the transfer would require both clubs reaching some kind of agreement with Man City, with his £120,000 wages presumably being covered by a combination of all three clubs with additional contributions from Gareth Southgate and the UK government. Anything to get little Joe in that England team against Tunisia on 18 June.

Klopp turns to Mahrez

With Philippe Coutinho set to join Barcelona for roughly £145m at some point in the near future (Mail), Liverpool are busy seeking a replacement for their inspirational Brazilian. And it could be Riyad Mahrez.

French paper L’Equipe says the Reds have made “first contact” with Leicester City about signing the Algerian winger this month. The Foxes board have apparently promised Mahrez he can leave the King Power Stadium if someone meets his asking price, which sounds reasonable until you see that the asking price is £50m.

Jurgen Klopp’s first choice to replace Coutinho, Monaco’s Thomas Lemar, is apparently “top of Man Utd’s wish list” too (Express). But of greater concern to the German manager will be the Express’s claim that Real Madrid will try to sign his other star man, Mohamed Salah, at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are willing to listen to “offers of £30m” for midfielder Moussa Sissoko, as if any club other than Tottenham would make the mistake of paying £30m for him (Mirror).

Elsewhere, Inter and AC Milan are batting to sign the imperious yet injury-prone Spurs midfielder Mousa Dembele (Sky Sports), Southampton have made a £17.5m bid for Monaco’s 26-year-old Argentinian striker Guido Carrillo (Sun) and Man Utd manager Jose Mourinho has blamed the club’s ball boys for the club’s stuttering home form, complaining that they are “too slow” (Sun). The only question is whether the youngsters should now be sacked, or summarily executed.
