Gossip: PSG 'target De Gea', Man City 'close on £35m utility man', Barcelona 'want Martial'
Paris Saint-Germain’s decision to spend almost £400m on two players this summer was ludicrous; it was wild; it was obscene; it was possibly illegal. But as a “statement of intent”, it is unparalleled in modern football history. And that £364m may even turn out to be excellent value for money.
Because PSG weren’t just paying for the bodies of two men; they were buying something priceless – the fear of the rivals. The reputation of being a team that could and would do anything to succeed.
As a result, you wouldn’t put anything past them anymore. Signing Lionel Messi; buying Belgium; purchasing the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and installing them as the new French monarchs. The parameters of impossibility have been smashed open by the Ligue 1 leaders.

And this is why Manchester United fans will be nervous this morning – because PSG reportedly want their goalkeeper.
The Red Devils have put a lot of time and effort into keeping David de Gea at Old Trafford amid some irritatingly persistent interest from Real Madrid. But just as it seemed they had succeeded in fending off one shark, another is said to be circling.
The Express states ominously that De Gea has “emerged as a player of interest” for PSG. Unai Emery’s side have recently been linked with a move for Atletico Madrid’s Slovenian keeper Jan Oblak, who has an £89m release clause in his contract.
But if they decide they think De Gea is slightly better, who’s going to stop them buying him instead?
Man City target £35m Roberto
Speaking of Neymar, he may be a multi-millionaire but he remains very loyal to his mates. Spanish paper Sport claims the Brazilian is trying to persuade PSG chiefs to sign Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool, just like he did with Barcelona chiefs when he was at the Nou Camp. It’s quite touching how he always looks out for Philippe.
Meanwhile, Manchester City are aiming to boost their title charge this January by signing Barcelona utility man Sergi Roberto. The Mirror says Pep Guardiola is willing to meet the £35m release clause of the 25-year-old, who can play in midfield or either full-back position. Kind of like a Spanish Fabian Delph.
Elsewhere, Arsenal will battle Inter Milan to sign 23-year-old Paraguayan midfielder Miguel Almiron, who plays for MLS side Atlanta United (Mirror), the Gunners face competition from Barcelona to sign Manchester United forward Anthony Martial (Mundo Deportivo) and, in some juicy historical gossip, Graeme Souness has revealed he rejected the chance to sign Eric Cantona and Peter Schmeichel (before they joined Manchester United) while he was manager of Liverpool in the early 1990s (Times). Ah well, it’s only a couple of players – it’s not like they wouldn’t win another title for 27 years or anything.
