Gossip: Swansea 'want Van Gaal as manager', PSG 'make £25m Alexis bid', Nzonzi 'spotted at Gatwick'

Managerial merry-go-round: Swansea want former Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal to replace sacked Paul Clement
Managerial merry-go-round: Swansea want former Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal to replace sacked Paul Clement

Here we are again. It’s that magical time of the year when the sound of bells jingles in the air, families sit carol-singing around the log fire and Swansea City decide who to appoint at their next manager.

The Swans begun the years 2014, 2016 and 2017 with a new gaffer, and 2018 will be no different following the dismissal of last year’s Christmas saviour, Paul Clement.

And this time, the man the Welsh side are reportedly lining up as boss is as seasoned, as charismatic and as cuddly as Santa Claus himself. It’s Louis van Gaal. Ho ho ho!

The Mirror reports that Swansea are “trying to persuade” the Dutchman to come to the Liberty Stadium and have “already sounded out” the former Manchester United manager, which is fast work considering Clement was sacked less than 24 hours ago.

LVG has been out of work since leaving Old Trafford 18 months ago, presumably waiting for the right opportunity to come along.

Swansea must therefore be banking on him harbouring a sadistic fantasy to take over a club that is rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table with a threadbare squad and little apparent hope of survival. He’s a pretty weird guy, so you never know.

Other names on Swansea’s shortlist, says the Mirror, are Ronald Koeman and Slaven Bilic. However, the man who has been instantly installed as the favourite for the job is Tony Pulis.

The Star says the Swans are seeking a “quick appointment” and the recently jettisoned West Brom boss could even take the helm in time for this Saturday’s six-pointer against Crystal Palace. All Pulis would need is a decent salary, a survival bonus and a 40% discount on merchandise at the club shop (60% on baseball caps).

PSG want Alexis in January

Meanwhile, this is almost certainly set to be Alexis Sanchez’s last Christmas as an Arsenal player. In fact, it might even be his last full month as a Gunner.

The Express claims Paris Saint-Germain are busy preparing a £25m January bid for the Chilean as they attempt to “steal a march” on Manchester City.

But PSG’s plans are doomed to fail, according to the Mirror, which says Arsenal will snub all offers for their star player next month and instead let him leave for free in the summer, when City will be ready and waiting with a £400,000-a-week contract offer.

It looks as though the Gunners may have beaten Everton to the signing of Steven Nzonzi after the Sevilla midfielder was “spotted” at London’s Gatwick airport (Sun). However, the Frenchman may have just been on a stopover at Gatwick because he got a good deal on Easyjet.

Elsewhere, Arsenal and Man City are considering bids for 25-year-old Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski next summer (Times), the Gunners and Liverpool are “in talks” to sign young Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos (Star) and Reds striker Daniel Sturridge is facing “World Cup heartbreak” after Jurgen Klopp refused to let him leave for regular first-team football next month (Mirror). One rival down, just a few more to go for Andy Carroll.
