When the Sun and the Mirror agree on something, does that raise the chance of it actually being true, or just mean it’s doubly likely to be made up? This is the question we must ask ourselves this morning in regards to the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti, who is claimed by both tabloids to be on his way to Manchester United.

“Verry Nice” is the shamelessly lazy headline that introduces the Sun on Sunday’s article on the subject, in which the Red Devils are tipped to launch a £75m bid for the 25-year-old Italian in addition to their imminent purchase of Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred.

United manager Jose Mourinho believes the pair would form a midfield partnership that will enable his side to “challenge Manchester City for the title”. Verratti is also wanted by Juventus, but United will offer him “better personal terms”.

The Sunday Mirror is even more excited, declaring that Verratti is Mourinho’s “top target” and in line to become the club’s “marquee summer signing”. As such, they have chucked an extra £25m on Verratti’s price, reporting that United would be willing to pay £100m.

This will all apparently “come as a blow to West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini” because the Chilean, laughably, “wants to sign Verratti too”. Sounds like the 64-year-old may be confused about the prestige of the club he has just joined, poor fella.

Real Madrid turn to Klopp

It’s a far cry from the days when Manuel was the manager of Real Madrid, whose search for his latest successor has reportedly led them to Jurgen Klopp.

The Sunday Express says the Liverpool boss has “emerged as the top target” to replace Zinedine Zidane in the world’s hottest hotseat after Los Blancos accepted that Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino will not be attainable.

The German recently came top in a poll of Madrid supporters who were asked to choose the club’s next boss. In fact, it seems the Express has based its entire article on the outcome of this poll.

As for Pochettino, he may not be completely out of the running yet, with Marca claiming he has set himself a “five-day deadline” to decide on his future. Although if he decides to leave, he may need to set another five-month deadline to convince Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to let him go.

Marca also claims that Cristiano Ronaldo told his Real Madrid teammates “weeks before” the Champions League final that he would be leaving the club, if you’re interested in that kind of thing.

Elsewhere, new Arsenal manager Unai Emery will aim to make his former Sevilla midfielder Steven Nzonzi one of his first signings in north London (Sunday Mirror), West Ham will “head the chase” to sign Gunners midfielder Jack Wilshere on a free transfer if he leaves the Emirates, which he won’t (Daily Star Sunday), and new Derby County manager Frank Lampard has declared that he would one day like to manage England (Sun on Sunday). Give it a month Frank and you’ll probably be the front-runner.
