Gossip: West Ham 'sack Bilic', Liverpool 'target David Silva', Luiz Chelsea future 'in doubt'

Slaven Bilic ‘is a dead man walking’, David Silva is a ‘Liverpool target’, David Luiz is ‘finished at Chelsea’

Depending on what paper you read, Slaven Bilic is either expected to get sacked today, or will be sacked tomorrow, or has already been sacked. Whichever way you swing it, the West Ham manager has had a more uncomfortable Sunday night than Her Majesty the Queen (who has been embroiled in a tax haven scandal ICYMI, but more on that later).

It would appear from Monday’s papers that the Hammers kit-wearing camel who has been hobbling around for nine months with an already broken back has finally downed tools completely and literally died. In other words, Saturday’s 4-1 home defeat by Liverpool was the final straw for the Irons board and Bilic is a goner.

The Guardian reports that the Croatian is “expected to be told he is no longer West Ham United’s manager during a meeting on Monday”. The Telegraph says Bilic will not be at this meeting, but will instead be informed of his disemployment “within 48 hours”. The Sun cites “reports” (i.e. one opportunistic journo on Twitter) stating that Bilic has “been sacked” already.

These publications appear unanimous in their belief that Man Utd and Sunderland legend David Moyes will be Bilic’s successor – the Hammers sensationally beating off competition from the Scottish national team for his signature. Wonder how long this camel will stay alive.

Antonio Conte’s Chelsea future seems more secure after the Blues beat Manchester United 1-0, but David Luiz’s does not. The Brazilian defender was dropped for the match and the Star says he may not be recalled – ever. Maybe Paris Saint-Germain will buy him back for £80m.

Silva lining for Liverpool

The above phrase “Silva lining for Liverpool” doesn’t actually make sense in the following context, but it’s the law that this headline must be used for stories about people named Silva.

And this story is a good one. The Sun reports that Manchester City’s David Silva – who is the best Silva out there – is being lined up for a move to Liverpool. The Reds will reportedly target the Spanish midfield maestro as a replacement for Emre Can, who looks set to join Juventus.

Inter Milan are also keen on Silva, although the Spaniard is under contract until 2019 so we’re not sure why either club think they have a chance of getting him before then.

Speaking of headlines that don’t make sense, the Sun opts for “Goodi Evans” to describe Everton and Man City’s pursuit of West Brom centre-back Jonny Evans . This derives from the phrase “good heavens”, presumably (?), but where does the i come from? Unless they think he spells his name Jonni Evans like some kind of Icelandic pop star.

Anyway, both Everton and City will have to pay a “huge fee” for the defender in they want him in January.

Meanwhile, the Toffees are also involved in the aforementioned tax haven scandal, with leaked documents suggesting the club might technically be owned by Arsenal director Alisher Usmanov rather than supposed majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri, which would be very bad (BBC News).

Elsewhere, Man City and Arsenal will battle to sign the 20-year-old Ajax midfielder Frenkie De Jong in January (Star), Steve McClaren is the latest inspirational guy to be approached about the vacant manager’s position at Rangers (Sun) and it has emerged that Leicester City turned down an offer from Barcelona for Riyad Mahrez in the summer because the Catalans didn’t meet the £50m asking price (Mirror). Bet the Algerian winger was really understanding about that.
