'We got what we deserved': Wigan Athletic boss on late Reading comeback victory
'We got what we deserved' said then-Wigan Athletic manager Shaun Maloney on Saturday's 2-1 win for Reading.
Maloney, who won the FA Cup with the Latics as a player and was manager since 2023, was sacked on Sunday following the loss to the Royals, sitting 15th in League One.
Noel Hunt side, now six unbeaten in League One, impressed at the Brick Community Stadium, deservedly turning around a narrow deficit to pick up another win.
Jayden Wareham and Tyler Bindon did the damage in the final 20 minutes, having gone behind earlier in the second half through Jason Kerr.
"It was a very disappointing performance," Maloney told the club media. "The result was probably fair, I don’t think we deserved anything from the game. We have been so inconsistent this season and I really didn’t like that first half today.
"How we can perform how we did at home to Huddersfield, to then produce that first half performance, I need to get it right because that was miles away from what we want in the first half both with and without the ball.
"We got what we deserved. The squad has been inconsistent but today was miles away from what we need."
Reading won the reverse fixture 2-0 in Berkshire back in August, completing a league double over Wigan.
Tomorrow, the Royals host struggling Exeter City as they continue to push for the play-offs heading into the final 13 matches of the season.
