GRADED: Every Reading player rated on performance at League One halfway stage
Reading have played 24 matches in League One, now officially entering the second half of the campaign despite not yet playing Shrewsbury Town.
Sat sixth and occupying the final play-off position with 22 matches remaining, the Royals have exceeded many supporters' expectations.
As we enter the second 'half' of the campaign, we have decided to take a look back at every player who has reached 10 appearances this season and grade them.
GOALKEEPERS
Joel Pereira, 18 appearances- B
A fans favourite who took over the number one position midway through last season, ‘El Gato’ has gone from strength to strength and is among the best goalkeepers in the division this time around. Making some fine saves, the Portuguese stopper has won the Royals points single-handedly.
David Button, 11 appearances- D
Often the wise head among youthful sides in cup competitions, the experienced keeper has struggled in his bit-part role and made some big mistakes. Ruben Selles was proved right in his call to bring Pereira in for League One matches.
DEFENDERS
Tyler Bindon, 27 appearances- A
Among the best defenders in League One, the teenager will not be playing at third tier level for much longer- although hopefully until the summer. Already a regular for his country, the central defender always looks composed and never flustered. Heading to the very top of the game.
Amadou Mbengue, 24 appearances- B
A perfect complement to Bindon, the slightly more erratic Mbengue has the speed and desire for a challenge which Bindon prefers not to showcase. Still young and versatile, he has continued to impress from last season.
Andre Garcia, 23 appearances- B
16 and 17 for this season, the teenager has not even made an Under-21 appearance before being given his full debut at Birmingham City on the opening day. A mixed bag performance wise, there is no doubting that he is impressing for someone so young. Looking more at home on the wing than at full-back, perhaps opportunities more advanced in the rest of the season can continue to push him
Jeriel Dorsett, 13 appearances- C
Still the best left-back on the books, Dorsett has struggled with injury this season and been unable to nail down his starting space. Single-handedly changed the game at Stevenage in October, showing there is still plenty to come from the defender.
Kelvin Abrefa, 14 appearances- C
Yet to nail down a starting space, the young defender has had to make-do with an advanced role in recent weeks upon returning from injury. Now back in the fold, it will prove a key few months to stake a claim.
Harlee Dean, 17 appearances- B
Night and day from last season. Left out under Selles for the final seven months of last season, Dean had to do with cup competitions until Noel Hunt stepped up in December. Since then, the 33-year-old has won fans over with his no-nonsense defending and strong mentality to return so strong.
Abraham Kanu, 12 appearances- C
A season full of peaks and troughs for the teenager, Kanu has endured some nights to forget (Colchester and Harborough) but has shown he is more than capable on other days. Consistency will come as he builds up more minutes in the legs.
Louie Holzman, 10 appearances- D
His first real run in senior football, Holzman is yet to fully find his feet and step up from positive displays in the Under-21s. More than adequate in most matches, defeat and a red card at Lincoln City exposed areas in which the youngster will look to progress.
Ashqar Ahmed, 12 appearances- C
Only having really made cameos to date, the 17-year-old has looked strong and fast. Will look to make more appearances and starts as the season progresses.
Michael Craig, 27 appearances: Consistency has dropped in recent weeks but there was a point, over the first few months, where the out-of-position full-back was among the Player of the Season candidates. Craig, and Reading, will hope he rediscovers this form upon return from injury.
MIDFIELDERS
Ben Elliott, 24 appearances- B
His performances have gone from strength to strength over the summer, turning from a boy to a man from last season. Out for a few months with injury, the Chelsea youngster and supporters will be gutted as he really found his form over the winter.
Lewis Wing, 28 appearances- B
Playing slightly deeper than he was last season, the stand-in skipper has not been able to catch the eye as much as he did last year but is still among the stand-out performers for the Royals.
Harvey Knibbs, 25 appearances- B
Perhaps a tad streakier than he was last season, the midfielder is already top scorer for the club and has a habit of netting in quick succession. In the top three for Player of the Season last year, the 26-year-old will surely make it again this time around.
Charlie Savage, 28 appearances- B
Probably one of the most improved from last season, Savage has become almost indispensable, particularly under Hunt. Always top of the running charts, the Wales international is bringing his passing range and goalscoring to the table.
FORWARDS
Chem Campbell, 22 appearances- C
Taking a bit of time to settle, the Wolves winger was one of the most important players in the squad when it came to the expiration of his original loan deal. Currently injured, it is positive news that the wide man returns to Berkshire until May and can hopefully pick up where he left off in December.
Mamadi Camara, 19 appearances- D
A difficult one to assess, Camara’s all-round game still needs work as he can be lightweight at times. However, he still has a knack of being in the right place at the right time when it comes to goal-scoring.
Sam Smith, 23 appearances- C
Incredibly consistent from last season, Smith is a high-end League One striker who knows his strengths and plays to them. Has a solid goal ratio this campaign and links up well with the likes of Knibbs and Wing. You generally know what you’re going to get with Smith up top.
Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan, 14 appearances- C
Just as he was continuing to impress after a breakout campaign in 2023/24, the forward suffered a long-term injury and is still yet to return. Will be like a new signing when he returns.
Jayden Wareham, 24 appearances- C
A striker who is always first choice for the cup competitions, the youngster has found minutes hard to come by in the league. Hard to judge as matches are usually done before Wareham enters the field, he has a handy ability to find the net in cup matches.
Adrian Akande, 16 appearances- C
His first real run-in league football, the winger is still trying to find the consistency required. End product needs work but he has the raw components needed to step up in the final few months of the campaign.
