Grand National 2024 full results: The winners, finishers, fallers and place order for every horse
The Grand National results for 2024 are below. The race was won by I Am Maximus, who went off as the 7/1 joint favourite. Corach Rambler, last year’s winner, unseated his rider at the first fence.
With some bookmakers paying out on each-way bets up to six places there was also good news for backers of Kitty’s Light, who finished fifth and Ain’t That A Shame, being ridden by his owner, who was sixth.

I Am Maximus sets up Mullins for tilt at Champion Trainer
Willie Mullins has carried everything before him this National Hunt season but capped it all when I Am Maximus, the 7-1 joint favourite, flew home from the Elbow to win an incident-free 176th Randox Grand National by seven and a half lengths from compatriots Delta Work and Minella Indo.
It was a third winner for owner JP McManus, a second for Mullins and a first for jockey Paul Townend who became only the seventh jockey to win the Gold Cup and National in the same year.
Despite it being comfortable at the finish, victory for the quirky eight-year-old looked anything but certain when he jumped the last in fifth and Minella Indo, the 2021 Gold Cup winner, appeared on the cusp of joining Golden Miller and L’Escargot in the history books as only the third horse to win both a Gold Cup and a National.
But having angled to try and get the rail at the Elbow, a furlong from the finish, and not really going anywhere, Townend switched round Minello Indo and Delta Work and, with daylight in front of him, I Am Maximus sprouted wings, his younger legs finding a gear that the valiant old stagers who chased him home were unable to match.
Mullins ran eight horses in Saturday’s race and now has a very realistic chance of being crowned British as well as Irish champion trainer this season after his prize-money haul from Cheltenham and Saturday’s £500,000 first prize took him to the head of the title race.
“He’s quirky, he’s immature, but he’s learning all the time. Nicky Henderson had him before me – he said to me to make sure I got him because Mike Grech [the former owner] was taking all his horses to Ireland, and he said that’s the horse I need to have. I put my hand up for him with Henrietta Knight [Grech’s racing manager].
“Nicky could see the talent the horse had, he knew he was quirky, and we just had to nurture that talent. An Irish National, an English National – what more do you want?
“He doesn’t do it on the gallops at home, he does his own thing. He’s quirky, but he has huge ability, and until other horses just get that out of him, we won’t know how good he is, but I think he could be a Gold Cup horse.
Speaking about Townend he added: “Paul is riding so well at the moment. He’s just riding with such confidence, and it’s like any sportsperson, when you’ve got that confidence things just happen for you. You make them happen, too, but the ball just bounces right next to you and bounces the right way. Paul’s seeing things other jockeys aren’t seeing at the moment; he’s just riding in a different zone.”
The jockey may not have the gift of the gab of his predecessor Ruby Walsh as first jockey to Mullins, but with the stable at a zenith never previously reached by a jump trainer, he is amassing quite a curriculum vitae with four Gold Cups and now a National.
“It’s what every young boy with a pony wants to do,” he said. “I’m living my childhood dream as a jockey.
“We didn’t get the clearest run from the second last to the last, but it kind of helped me and I felt that when I got him out he was going to start motoring when he got into clear air, which he did. The ones in front of me, I’m sure they weren’t looking for me, but I had them well in my sights. The Gold Cup is the Gold Cup and Grade 1s are hard to win, but Grand Nationals are a bit different and you need so much luck. I’m a lucky boy.”
McManus, who has now won with Don’t Push It in 2010 and Minella Times in 2021 and fielded five horses in this year’s race, was delighted. “For me there is only one race,” he said. “Everything points to the Grand National. I don’t have anything to say about Willie that hasn’t already been said and if people don’t say it, they know it.”
There is always a story attached to the winner but I Am Maximus’s backstory is not a happy one. Bought from Ireland by Henrietta Knight for Grech, a Salford businessman who named the horse after his wife, Maxine, he was forced to sell his horses shortly before Cheltenham last year. Grech was found dead last summer aged 63.
“I fell in love with him as a three-year-old at the Costellos and Mike flew over by helicopter to see him,” recalled Knight. “All he ever wanted to do was have a runner in the National let alone win it. Maxine and his five children are there today and I just wish they’d had more involvement.”
The biggest winner, however, was the race itself and with 21 finishers from 32 starters it vindicated a raft of changes designed to make it safer..
There were no fallers – unless you count the loose Corach Rambler going down at the second – four unseated riders and the rest pulled up. If it lacked some of its customary drama, that was probably no bad thing 12 months after the protest-affected disaster of 2023.

Recent Grand National winners
The Grand National has a knack for turning up a winner with an entertaining backstory and did so again when Corach Rambler took the title in 2023. In finishing first, the 8-1 favourite turned 21-year-old Cameron Sword into the youngest winning owner in the race’s long history.
The year before, in 2022, Sam Waley-Cohen, an amateur jockey, announced that the Grand National would be the last race of his career – and then won it aboard 50-1 outsider Noble Yeats. In 2021, Rachael Blackmore became the first woman to ride the winner of the Grand National when she took charge of Minella Times.
