GREENOCK JUNIORS assistant manager Stephen Docherty has warned his side side of the threat that Girvan will pose when the South Ayrshire side make the trip to Ravenscraig this weekend.

The Nock No.2 insists that his side will need to be at their best and match the performance put in at Victoria Park against Irvine Vics last time around if they're to keep on the coat-tails of top of the table side, Thorn Athletic.

Docherty told the Tele: “The squad is in a good place after a really positive result last week.

"To score three goals and not concede was a real positive. The guts and passion we displayed to ensure three points will be the same template for this week.

"Girvan are a tough side and have goals in them, so we know they can be dangerous. They have had a tough February facing three teams in the top half of the league."

The teams last met in August at Hamilton Park with Greenock, despite going a goal behind, emerging 3-1 winners.

A second half brace in the space of two minutes from Innes Lambert sealed the points for the Nock in a tightly contested match.

The South Ayrshire team have scored more goals than a number of teams above them, so they clearly carry an attacking threat heading into their trip to Inverclyde.

And whilst their most recent match ended in a 4-1 loss to Glenvale, the previous week, they won 3-1-away to Threave Rovers one of the favourites for promotion.

Greenock’s previous victories may have been against the bottom two Wishaw and Irvine however the management team have been delighted with attitude of the players and Docherty says his side will need to remain focused against Keenan's side if they're to come away with three points.

He added: "They had an extremely positive result against Threave and had a great 45 mins against league leaders Thorn Athletic before coming unstuck in the second half.

"We need to be extremely focused and start well against them. We will prepare with a targeted session on Thursday in regard to how we wish approach the game from a tactical perspective.

"We continue to focus on the game in front of us only and will not overlook Girvan.”

There are a few injury concerns for the Nock management team leading into Saturday. Pat Tonner has resumed training and may be fit for the match day squad, whilst Tai Beckley and Jamie Cunningham are nursing knocks, although they are likely to be available.

There are a couple of key Third Division matches elsewhere on Saturday that may well impact the promotion chances of various teams.

Leaders Thorn Athletic visit Glasgow Perthshire, who are still on the fringes of the promotion race.

A win for Thorn might be sufficient to cut Perthshire adrift from the pack, whilst a home win would bring the table-topping Renfrewshire side back in Greenock’s sights, assuming the Nock secure all three points.

Threave, who have games in hand on all the other teams in the promotion race, travel to Paisley to face Glenvale, while Ardeer, who are one place behind Nock in the standings, will be expected to keep the heat on the Ravenscraig side with victory at home to bottom dogs Wishaw.

Kick-off at Ravenscraig on Saturday is at 2pm.

Greenock are sponsored by Saveheat, Keystore Cowal View, Safer Group, The Lighthouse Bar, McGills, ARC and Blairs.
