WHILST all eyes were on Murrayfield and Scotland's Six Nations opener against Italy at the weekend, Greenock Wanderers' ladies stormed to a brilliant National Shield win over Inverness Craig Dunain.

The Fort Matilda women'sfirst XV kicked off their campaign with a home test against the Highland outfit, where they'd come out on top in a stunning 92-5 win.

The tie presented a great chance for the squad to get a taste for scoring, with no fewer than 14 tries shared between nine players.

Emily Sweeney led the charge, finding a way past the Inverness defence four times, whilst Catriona Gallagher and Tina Hemphill shared a brace of scores between them.

Kirsty McWilliam, Vikki Warnock, Hannah Docherty, Julia Ballingall, Louise Reddy and Nicole Boffey all added to the score line, whilst 11 conversions from Gallagher helping her accumulate a whopping 32-point haul.

Elsewhere at the weekend, the Wanderers boys' under-13s travelled to the south side of Glasgow where they lost out 31-21 to Whitecraigs.

The Under 15s were away to Strathendrick in the cup and lost 61-19.

A poor first half in which they conceded 47 points led to a few changes at half-time, making the second half much more of a contest, with Finn McCabe, who was only playing his second match at that age group, particularly catching the eye in the second half.

The team will have the opportunity to improve their performance in the return fixture in a month's time.

The Under 16s' match was cancelled and a very last minute tie was arranged with West of Scotland, one of the best sides in the area. It was no surprise that the Wanderers team went down 48-0, but it was a good learning experience for the boys and they competed throughout the match.

This Saturday, February 8, attention switches back to a massive match for the Wanderers men's first XV at home to a Stewartry side who are just one place and six points better off than the Greenock men - meaning that a Wanderers win could set up a thrilling climax to the fight to avoid relegation from National 4.

Kick-off at Fort Matilda on Saturday is at 2pm.
