Gyokeres, Baena, Dibling - Newcastle United transfer truth or lie as January reality laid bare
Newcastle United continue to be linked with a number of players during the January transfer window.
The window has been opened for just over three weeks and despite several players being linked with a move to St James' Park, the club are yet to sign new reinforcements. Alex Murphy and Isaac Hayden meanwhile, have left Tyneside to join Bolton Wanderers and Portsmouth respectively.
Speaking about the Magpies' transfer plans, Eddie Howe highlighted the importance to stay within the Profitability and Sustainability Rules. "What I’ll say on that is that trading is essential, both in and out, to the model of PSR," he said. "I think the days where teams don’t sell players, unless your revenue streams are so big, are gone.

"It doesn't mean we can't hopefully make big signings and players for the here and now who are ready to play, but maybe not all under that category at the same time. Our revenue streams aren’t where we want them to be ultimately, we’re trying to grow them. So I think trading in and out is going to be essential.
"Hopefully, it’s not players that we’re forced to sell like. Hopefully, it’s in a more stable setting, but you can’t guarantee anything. We will try and do our best. There’ll be a lot of twists and turns, but the want from everyone internally is to try and improve the squad. If we can do, we will. If we can’t, we won’t."
Here, Chronicle Live has taken a look at the latest links and rated the likelihood of them materialising.
Viktor Gyokeres to Newcastle - LIE
FootballTransfers reported that Newcastle are 'actively pursuing' the Swedish forward as Alexander Isak continues to be linked with a move away. It's said the club leading the chase to sign him after holding discussions with the Portuguese giants over Gyokeres.
Gyokeres is believed to have an £85million release clause though that fee is likely to come down in the summer. Reports in Portugal claim he has a gentleman's agreement with Sporting which would allow him to leave the club for as little as between £58.6m and £62.8m.
Isak, however, is going nowhere. The striker is under contract for another three seasons and Newcastle are not looking at Gyokeres at this stage.
Jonathan David to Newcastle - TRUTH
Chronicle Live understands that Newcastle are interested in the Lille star this year. A high-level club employee was in the stands for Lille's 2-1 win over Nice in Ligue 1 last weekend.
David, who will be out of contract in the summer, is thought to be open to options around Europe. Qualifying for the Champions League would appear to be an important factor for David.
Besides Newcastle, Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Manchester United are also keen.
Douglas Luiz swap deal - LIE
Juventus have reportedly offered the former Aston Villa midfielder to Newcastle. That's according to Italian outlet TV Play who state Luis was offered as a possible swap deal that would see Sandro Tonali head the other way.
The likes of Manchester United and Tottenham have also been credited with an interest in the Brazilian but whether he does return to the Premier League remains to be seen. Whatever happens, Newcastle won't be entertaining a swap deal with Tonali, who has been outstanding in recent weeks in the No.6 role. United and the player's agent have insisted he is going nowhere after returning from a lengthy ban.
Lloyd Kelly to Juventus - TRUTH
Juventus again. This time there is truth to the proposal. The Old Lady have been in touch over a potential loan move for Kelly, despite the player only joining United in the summer on a free transfer from Bournemouth.
To seal a quick move from Tyneside to Turin remains unlikely at this point, but Juve's interest still hasn't gone away. Unless they agree to an obligation to buy, with a £25m fee being suggested, there won't be a deal. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe revealed on Friday: "We've certainly not had any bid anywhere close to making the club make a decision on that."
William Gomes to Newcastle - LIE
Newcastle are in the picture to sign Sao Paulo's Gomes in the near future, according to Brazilian outlet Bolavip Brasil. The 18-year-old joined the Brazilian giants in 2021 and broke into the first team two years later.
He went on to make 11 Serie A appearances that season and also featured in Copa Libertadores. After tying the youngster to a new deal until the summer of 2028, Sao Paulo have slapped a €120m release clause (£101m) on Gomes.
Newcastle have been linked with the player since October. While they are keen to sign young players with potential, and have scouted South America extensively, they won't be moving for an unproven teenager at that price.
Tyler Dibling to Newcastle - TRUTH
Dibling continues to attract interest from a number of clubs with Tottenham and RB Leipzig in the frame to sign him. The Mail describe Newcastle as admirers of the Southampton midfielder who is expected to be out of action for the next four to six weeks with an injury.
Nonetheless, Southampton value him at £55m. Addressing the transfer links, Saints boss Ivan Juric said: "There are no assurances in football, we know that. But I am pretty sure that I will be coaching Dibling all this year. He is very motivated, like we see in the game. I saw him really focused, concentrated. No problem."
Newcastle are interested in Dibling, and have made moves in the past to sign him, especially after he scored a hat-trick at St James' Park as a 16-year-old. However, if they decide to push forward with a deal to sign the teen, it will be in the summer at the earliest.
Alex Baena to Newcastle - LIE
The Magpies, alongside Nottingham Forest and Bayern Munich have been named as one of the clubs who have activated the Spanish winger's £51m release clause, according to Fichajes. The 23-year-old has been in fine form for Villarreal this term and has contributed with five goals and as many assists in 18 La Liga games.
However, the Magpies are not currently in the market for any player at that cost this transfer window, never mind activating a release clause.
