Oli Shaw delivered a stoppage time winner on derby day to sink Airdrie in a five-goal thriller - but Hamilton boss John Rankin is still demanding MORE from his striker.

The Accies hitman hit a double to down the Diamonds and take his season's goal tally to 14 goals before the turn of the year, making him the Championship's top scorer with 10 goals.

Shaw opened the scoring after 14 minutes with a predatory strike inside the box and Stuart McKinstry grabbed his first goal for the club in a pulsating first-half, which saw Airdrie twice peg back their rivals with goals from Chris Mochrie and Gavin Gallagher.

Shaw popped up to hook home from Reghan Tumilty's cut back late on to take Accies up to seventh in the Championship.

Yet his gaffer feels the 26-year-old former Kilmarnock and Motherwell man is capable of being even better.

Rankin said: "I am delighted for Oli and the boys. I knew it was going to be a tough day, it's a derby between Christmas and New Year, and we've got the three points.

"But I think Oli can score more and I think he can do more.

"He has scored 14 goals - and I am not complaining about that by any means - but when I look at today, he has a chance before he scores where he is through on goal and he could drive in, but he doesn't.

"When Oli is in confidence and flying, he is the only guy who can compose himself and find the net in those [one-on-one] situations.

"I'm delighted we have him at the football club and I think we will see more of him in the second part of the season because he has hit those consistency levels.

"He is playing game after game, which he hasn't done for a number of years.

"If we can demand more from him, whether it be hold up play, getting in behind and him demanding off others, then he'll have a good end to his career.

"He is only in the middle of it right now and I think there is more to come."

Accies took the lead in 14 minutes when Jamie Barjonas dinked the ball over the top for McKinstry and the winger picked out Shaw for a composed finish.

Hamilton's lead only lasted five minutes as a free-kick on the right was swung in by Adam Frizzell. His delivery took a nick on its way to the back post, where Mochrie nodded the ball into the far corner for the equaliser.

Seven minutes before the break, the hosts got themselves back in front with another fine move. Shaw slid a pass down the right wing for Connor Smith and he spotted McKinstry unmarked at the back post, allowing the winger to hammer the ball into the roof of the net.

It looked like Hamilton would hold a half-time lead but Gavin Gallagher had other ideas, taking Ben Wilson's pass and rifling home a low strike from 25-yards in stoppage time.

Airdrie started the second half brightly and a vital block was required to deny Gallagher adding to his tally with a fierce strike inside the box just two minutes after the restart. Seconds later, Mochrie had two bites at a strike in the six-yard box, but couldn't find a way through.

Hamilton piled on the pressure late on and Airdrie eventually caved when O'Hara fed Tumilty and his cut back was turned in by Shaw.

Incredibly, Kevin O'Hara blazed over and then put a one-on-one wide when he should have added some gloss to the scoreline.

Rankin added: "I was delighted with the ending.

"The first half we were so disappointed to concede so late, but I'm over the moon with the way we got the goal at the end.

"We spoke about delivering crosses from that area but I think we were delivering them too early because Toddy was on and we were desperate to put the ball in.

"It's a great pick out from Reghan and when I look at the finish from Oli, it is incredible. He doesn't just try and put his foot through it, he just lifts it over the goalkeeper."
